Here's my plan...How about a bit of island hopping....Victorian style..

Drive down to Stony Point.

Get the Phillip Island ferry across to Cowes..$10..and hope they let us take our SUP boards.. (I'll suss that out)

Paddle from Phillip Island (Cowes) across to French Island.

Paddle from French Island back to Stony Point.

East peasy.. ..We just need to pick the right wind and tide..but it shouldn't be too hard.

This map shows a green line for the ferry trip..and red lines for our paddle back.

Who's in..Im sure Helke and I are in..in fact we might even do a trial run first.

We might even be lucky enough to get some of those big bommies out in the middle..

Here's a link to the ferry site.. http://www.interislandferries.com.au/ferry.php

YES! Pick me!
Great plan DJ, but the tides run very fast and strong in Westernport bay, so you will need to do some homework on the best times. It would be impossible to paddle against the tide.
You're very optimistic with the straight red line for the paddle back....I'm sure I can't paddle that straight!
I would also suggest using lifejackets for a trip like that.

Not a bad little paddle there DJ. Just Googled your distances there.

it's about 10km to do the island stop, or 8.3km to go straight. Our coast run was 17km, and took about 3.5 hours, so I imagine it will take you about 2 hours or 1:45 if you straight. I'd go straight if I were you.

When are you doing this paddle? If it's while I'm down there, I'm in.

Saturday morning is looking like a good day for it. Might be a bit short notice though for a few people.

Predicted Conditions
Low tide 7:30am high tide 3:00pm
Weather: Sunny
Winds: Light
Swell: 4'

All up it sounds like a long half day sort of thing.

Meet at Stony point at 7:30am. Catch Ferry at 8:00am to Cowes. 9:00am paddle back to Stony Point. Arrive Stony Point midday. Probably back in Melbourne around 2:00pm

If it looks sus we can always have some fun around Philip Island and catch the ferry back, or alternatively scrap it this time and paddle around Point Leo/Somers/flinders instead - plenty of salmon about now ?

Oliver..This Saturday might be rushing it a bit..I need to check the tides and wind for the day and it's a bit early now to tell for sure..I'd also like to take the day off work so I'm not rushing back.

I'd love to wait till JB is here (in a couple of weeks) and have him join us..Fingers crossed we get the right conditions while he's here..A southeaster would be good..We need a south wind with no west in it.

Helke has exams right now so it's sorta bad timing for her right now also..but she's very keen.

This Saturday 'is' looking good..Maybe we should do a long one on the bay as a type of training run.

Also the guys a SHQ are interested in joining us and they may even post something on their site to advertise it.

I big group would be great..(but not to big)..and lets not make a race of it..Just keep it casual..Maybe even a cooked breakfast at Cowes..and lunch at Stony point.

JB might be right..We could go straight across..and then follow the shoreline to Stony Point..and maybe do French Island another time..I first thought French Island would break it up because it would be half way and we could go ashore and rest for a bit.

I was thinking 2 hours max to French Island and then another 2 hours across to the mainland..I know that's slow compared to JB figures but his coast run was a sort of race I think.

Don't be fooled into thinking it will be easy and that it's not that far..I've windsurfed most of the way and it's a hell of a long way..and its as close to open ocean as you can get..We really need to right conditions.

See you guys Saturday for a SUP and we'll talk some more about it.

DJ

Also....

Last summer I did a bike ride to the Island and took some pics..and here's a few that show the distance across.

This is Piont Leo (not far from Stony point) and looking across to the Phillip Island.

Getting ready to show the giant worm on the way down to the Island..

Islantis surf shop on the Island.

This is the pier at Cowes looking across to the mainland.

This is the same pier looking straight across to French Island.

I've even made an invention for the trip. This is what I use to secure my fishing milk crate setup to my boards. I'm thinking of getting a stretchy kayak nylon netting bag and fixing it to the pvc tubing which just slots nicely on the side of the board for holding drinks, snacks etc for long journeys. Similar in principle to what Nick has on his C4.

East peasy.. ..We just need to pick the right wind and tide..but it shouldn't be too hard..... Who's in..Im sure Helke and I are in..in fact we might even do a trial run first.

Errrr. I think I agree more with your latter - revised - statement on how difficult it may be, could be a bit premature this w/e and it may be something that we need to get support with etc...... however, it would still be worthwhile to check what we would be up against and take a look. Conditions look very good this Saturday? Even if we just do the ferry trip or drive past Stony Point for a looksy on the way to Flinders for a paddle in the sheltered waters around there?

Obviously with these sorts of things you have to plan a bit in advance. So I suggest that if a big song and dance is going to be made and you decide on a date for the event. Then you have a plan B if the conditions don't suit.

I spose any wind North or North West you could always just paddle to Philp Island and get the Ferry back. Good idea DJ, I hope SHQ get involved.

A milk crate is a little over board. You won't need that much food or water for a 10km paddle. 600ml of water and a mars bar is heaps. I use the mast track on the board, and screw a mesh bag that is just big enough, it sits just in front of your feet, and is easy to bend down and get to.

The milk crate I normally use to hold all my fishing gear - ie 3 rods/reels, knife, cutting board, rod holders bucket, drinks ice fishing tackle etc. My idea is just to use a bag.

When are you in Melbourne JB?

DJ, are you planning the usual paddle at St Kilda? Or do you want to do the river on Saturday? I'm up for anything, including a reconnaissance mission to Westernport Bay if required.

This Saturday is looking like a ripper..and the first good day that we've had for a while.

It should be fine, warm and sunny with a 10-15 knot Northerly increasing to about 20 knots..This would be perfect to do a down wind run from St Kilda to Sandringham.

I was thinking I'll pick Oliver up from Sandy marina at 930am (sharp) and give him a lift with his board up to St Kilda and meet you and all of us head off by 10am.

Once we make it so Sandringham marina we can leave our boards at the Sandy kiosk (I know them and they'll look after our boards)..and Oliver can give us a lift back to get our cars..and we then drive back for our boards.

It's a bit of stuffing around but worth it IMO..A north wind of 20 knots should give us a good down wind run..and a good warm up for our Island crossing..

What do you guys think?..We can talk more about Phillip Island then.

Being a potentially good day on Saturday with a good surf report I'm keen for a bit of a change of scenery. The St Kilda/Sandringham coast is getting very familiar.

I'm leaning towards something different this w/e - a morning at the surf / Point Leo - Flinders / Mornington - Safety Beach/ Sandringham - Beaumaris.

Oliver..I think a 20 knots off shore wind in the surf might not be as much fun as you expect.

Anywhere south of the bay will be very onshore and choppy...Another option is Parkdale and up past Mentone, Beaumaris to Rickets and back... ?

I know St Kilda is similar territory for us but starting at middle park beach and going way out and past St kilda, Elwood, Brighton, past Green point and Hampton to Sandringham is something we've never done.

I was looking at it as an opportunity to do a test run for some serious distance in preparation for Phillip Island in a couple of weeks time when JB is here.

I don't want it to sound like I'm not for going to the waves..If that's what you guys want..I'm in..But we will need a VERY early start to avoid the wind.

Kind of got my heart set on the Mornington Peninsula for Saturday morning. I've got a friend up in Somers that I haven't seen in some time. So will probably give it a miss this Saturday.

Just did a bit more research on the proposed trip.

The trip is 8km long from Stony Point or Somers.

From Stoney Point stop off at the 4km mark before the 4km channel crossing, which is directly South. Will get there in no time with 10 - 15kn North winds predicted.

Or ride the incoming tide and wind from Somers to Cowes. Take a break on the sand bars at the half way point. Low tide is at 7:30am tomorrow.

Then deflate the ULI and catch the 12:40pm ferry back.

Although, I'm more keen to do paddle around and try my luck trawling for salmon around Flinders tomorrow, I've got fond memories of this coastline. And what's better I'm taking Seb with me.

You got to love google maps

Thanks for the maps and info Oliver...Good luck with the fishin' tomorrow..

If you get a chance pop into the ferry service and check that they still run through winter time..and see if it's ok to take our boards on board.

Check out Big Left when you're at Flinders..

Big Left looked really good this morning, about 5-6ft with a light offshore wind - a bit big for me and Seb though, lots of people looking from the gunnery but only about 4 out there. Didn't get a chance to go down to Crib Point and check out the ferry. From personal observation it would have been pretty close to ideal conditions for a crossing.... Oh well, leave it for another time when all the planets are in line . I'd imagine the ferries would run in winter - I guess you could always call them to make sure.

Seb and I had a really good paddle from the pier at Flinders to Shoreham, where we found some clean fun 1-2 ftrs. On the way back home we dropped in at Point Leo, which in hindsight would have been the place to be.

I Didn't get on to any fish - snapped my rod while surfing with all my gear strapped to the board - all worth it though. Really enjoyed having the opportunity to paddle and surf with my 12yo son by my side. Can't get better than that - how much better can supping get?

The ULI board really impressed me again. I've got to say it's been the best purchase I've ever made while drunk.... even better than those Souvlakies I used to get from the Hollywood Cafe after big nights out watching punk bands at the Old Greek Theatre in Richmond.

It does sound great Oliver.. ..I'll ring the ferry people Monday.

John and I had a good one also...We paddled up to Port Melbourne Pier..and under Station Pier.

I fell in again trying to take a picture of the dolphins that surfaced around us.. ..Bending, twisting, leaning will get you every time..

Got the camera wet (missed the shot)..It wouldn't work for a while but came good once it dried out..Phew!

I'll post some pics of our paddle under Station Pier soon.
