I'm a longboarder paddling for a wave and old sup mate who has blown into the lineup over the past year from down south, does a late turn and start paddling for the same wave on my inside and behind me,when I stated paddling there was nobody looking at it so yep its all mine, next second I see old mate from the corner of my eye next his rail is banging into my hand as I'm still paddling, this guy drives us crazy.I just gave him the look of death and said nothing he then goes on a rant how it wasn't his fault.End result a very sore left hand.

tough one macaha, but happens to SUP all the time, as in we are in your postion. Cant get right inside, waiting in line up, go for what you think no one else wants then someone on a mal or Sb spins inside you after you have already commited... I just try to pull off safely as I figure guy inside has right of way and staying on is a lose lose situation

One can argue that we were paddling/on the wave first, but the probem with that is that rule is easily taken advantage of by longer boards and sups.....

He wasn't looking at the wave when I spun first then he must have decided he wanted it as well
I'm all for sharing but this guy is known to be blind which does put others into danger.

It's basically a snake but out wide , mal riders are just as quilty. Reading between the lines your supper mate is probably starting on the outside of you out wide and paddles around you to the inside. Just bad edquite IMO and you should say stop snaking me (he probably doesn't even know he is snaking you). No need to get in a blew over but if he keeps doing it just keep at him , he'll get the message.

Can Be tricky hey!,

I had a guy once who was on the inside and pulled out of several waves in a row which correctly i left for him, every time i paddled around him he would move inside me again, i finally got to the point of no return on a wave that he didnt looked interested in only to see him quickly turn and catch it!. I tried to punch back as he cut in underneath me but i was too late and lost my board only to feel a thump though my leggy....1 wrecked rail to his board and a massive dent to the bottom of mine!...he came back not too impressed so i just told him that i wasnt out there to watch him pull out of waves all day!....there are plenty of gooses around!

No excuse for snaking anyone ever. just plain greedy in my opinion.

Next time you see him in the carpark have a quite word about what he did that day and that you would prefer he didnt do it again.

I have found that if you are direct, not agressive and factual these dudes are so perplexed that they often get the message.

Then again i have lots of grey hair so thery might feel sorry for me.

Take an old board out and fade him into a few close outs. I do it all the time on any board if someone snakes me. Angry old man, me!!!
Had others on mals do it and now stand ups doing it. I mention that if they snake me again I'm going to drop in and once they have been warned, that's what I do.

Greed is good, surf every wave you can catch, if the prone guys raft up move to a different spot and surf every wave you can catch. Sups turn crap waves into good waves, the prone surfers huddle in one tiny spot, no problem to pick off the ride-able waves either side of that spot and when a big set comes through carefully ride it through the middle of them.

Easy to have the break to yourself, early in the am the ocean is empty, no prone surfers until after KFC opens for their breakfast. Can be a few sup,ers early in the morning and sharing a break with equally mobile riders doesn't seem to create issues locally.

As for the Quiet (quite?) word in the carpark I would recommend against that in SA, it always escalates. Since I surf locally I know I wont ever see them again, why try to educate a tourist?

If you do happen to drop in and we are all guilty of that at times, bail out early, as soon as you realize, hopefully before you are called on it and don't flick your board at the head of the inside surfer, everyone sees you do it and then you will really start to be hassled. Let them have the best ride they can, if you are respectful then they will do the same for you.

Somewhere further up this thread I read the "I saw it first so its mine forever rule", that just nonsense.

One of the best things about surfing is we go when we want, where we want and as fast as we want, if you want lots of rules with umpires pick another past time,

A couple of faces/emoticon things might help, dazza - I'm struggling to know where you're taking the mickey or being serious in the post above.

it was a snake pure and simple, and anyone who doesn't understand that obviously hasn't earned their stripes. I let them get away with it the first time as an innocent mistake, as we all make them some times when the froth is up, then make a note the second time and let them know when they paddle back out and inside me again that the next one is mine, and then I go. I must also admit to enjoying seeing how far up the point or hopelessly far inside I can paddle them before they cotton on.

Had a similar thing at a Miami beach break. Sitting on a bit of a bank solo and this 'ol mate is paddling out. I go for a wave with plenty of time, and he is inside, does a quick turn around kinda while still heading out and goes. I'm not as good as this bloke, so its too late to pull off the wave, so I take off thinking "oh well bugger off, you snaked me" Nothing was said, but he didn't make a new friend that day!

He didn't bother getting out assessing what's going on and then slip into the groove...no, it was like bugger you I'll just take everything.

He even called me to go right on a sweet little left because he was on my left and wanted the wave. "Your going right mate?" I just replied with a loud and annoyed," FFS mate" and went left. He pretty much paddled away after that.

Sounds like a similar bloke.

Guess we've all had the wrong done to us. Got abused by a long boarder once. When I asked him what I'd done his answer was if you don't even know you should be out here. Then told me to get some surf etiquette. The very next wave he snaked me

Man, people need to learn to speak to the person at the time of the incident, rather than analyzing it online forever and a day!

If a guy snakes you, call him on it.

If he gets aggressive, either become his bitch, or go have a dust up in the carpark.

I can't believe how much the internet is impacting on our ability to communicate these days.

Oh well at least that's two of us feeling sorry for me I spose.

what I was actually referring to was the practice of paddling inside the muppet who just paddled inside you, then they paddle inside you, and on it goes. If they don't try and snake you, everyone takes their turn and all is well. But yes, I do enjoy hassling the hasslers.

If surfing a point and your skill level is higher you will surf deeper inside than most. If your not prepared to GO DEEPER then thats your issue imo

As for beachies share the waves as they generally shift around. On the GC you have to expect these occurrances regularly.
At The Alley on any given day there could be anywhere from 40-100 people in the line up from the Rock into Laceys.

I don't hold back in the surf and catch every wave I can. Certainly not going to sit/stand around all day waiting and watching everyone else. Respect others where you can but take every wave you know you can get and pick out the people you know who can surf and those that are back paddlers, they can drift down the line up imo !!
Everyone has been and will be dropped in on or faded.Just the way it is these days. If you let it get to you, you will loose the point of why you are in the water to start with.

Blatant dropins arent going to help your cause either

Enjoy the waves people I know I will !

Ha ha, I ride a longboard , SUP and occasionally nowadays s short board. My option: if this guy is as big a serial pest as described, he would be an utter pain in the butt regardless of which board he is riding. From what I know of these types, some won't get the hint no matter how many times others threaten to beat them around the head.

Blame the idiot; NOT the board?
