After reading the troll post it got me thinking about what draws me to sup.

Perth has ****ty waves and I would be like doggy and legion if I still just shortboarded all bitter and twisted. Sup makes crap waves fun so I get out more. I can paddle to outer reefs with out a boat and still surf pretty good. I can surf big waves with out a jet ski.

The kicker was getting into downwinding as Perth is really windy so instead of setting up my kite or windsurfer, sails masts boom lines pump up etc, I have just the board and paddle and surf runners for k's.

Fiittest I have been for years and have met heaps of really nice people. Every breezer i have met has been genuinely happy to finally meet the person behind the name. The kayak community is stoked to have us in the races, i think they feel sorry for us as they whizz past

This stuff has been posted before I know but it is nice to reflect

I stopped by 34 beaches in 15 mins this morning with my 12 foot Glide on the roof. 27 degrees at 6.30am, sun shining and keen to get in the ocean.

Not a wave in sight except a knee high peak at the south end of Coledale. 2 in the water so I paddled out and shared. 30 mins later, 19 in the water, 4 getting ready to paddle out and 2 downing longnecks talking about going out for a swim !

I paddled north, left them too it, paddled to Wombarra, a few waves, around to Scarborough, 4 more waves, turned around, light downwind run back down to Coledale with a 10 knot northerly blowing and in for a coffee.

Why do I SUP ? Go figure.....thinking I had a trillion times more fun then the guys on the only bank on the coast !

Bitter and twisted I'm not, I didn't say anything out of line in that last thread and the guy that started SUPs anyway so he was just having a go at his own kind.

Not biting mac, just stating facts that the others missed. Btw fellas have a crack at me but legion hasn't posted anywhere for ages I think he is holidays. So I think he should be left out of this.

Btw, I'm not a great shortboarder but I do love what I do. I also rock climb and waterski so my need for extra water time isn't as great as probably hilly ect. My 2c got what its worth, jack sh1t these days

Just so you guys know, some of the best posts in here are from DJ dogman and simondo, those are so full of stoke and defiantly have the right idea. Just wrong is just a funny bastard imo.

One of the best posts in here was one of DJs when he had a paddle around Port Phillip Bay inparticular around the boats in the harbor, nice and tranquil just cruising taking pics ect. Pity there isn't more of that in these forums.

Oh and of course when he got stranded in shipping lanes, I bet it wasn't funny at the time but looking back, I'm glad I troll these forums....

Hilly,
oh how I wish I was supping instead of surfing when I was posted to Perth for two years in the military. It was hell as I could only enjoy my Margaret/Rottness trips occasionally, and the crowds at the local beaches were unbelievable for average waves at best. I was always looking to sea at those outer reefs with envy, oh well my Harley got me through those days. So glad to see you guys in the Perth area have been saved. Hallelujah......Now I'm Supping it is so hard to take out anything but, love it!!!

I'm pretty new to most water sports really, been kayaking for a couple of years, kite surfing for two seasons, and surfing since about May last year.

It's around about a 2 hour return trip for me to the nearest surf beaches, but a five minute walk to the river so I got my first SUP at Christmas. Since then I've been out Supping anywhere from 4 to 5 times a week, surfing and kitesurfing once and haven't touched a kayak

It makes flat water fun and the simple rapids 10 mins drive up the road awesome

Like Hilly was saying instead of having to stuff around with lines, pumping up kites and then more often than not sitting around waiting for tassie's fickle winds to sort themselves out I can just grab my paddle and go

Best of all, the whole family enjoys it and instead of me getting my gear and nicking off by myself for hours on end I can grab the kids and missus and we're all stoked to be out together. If my 2.5 year old so much as sees me look at my board and paddle he's off getting his life jacket repeating "I come, I come"

And to top it off it's somehow improved my surfing as well

I went for my first surf in months the other day, expecting to be gumby reincarnated and somehow by osmosis I had one of my best sessions. I was heaps fitter paddling out and onto waves, and even my popping up and balance was better

Nah, shortboarding's not the reason. I'm just bitter and twisted by nature.

I traded a w/surf board for a sup to get fit so I can do more w/surfing...also mtb-ing. Lately, I've been suping and mtb-ing nearly every day due to lack of wind & the old frustrations & anger of having no wind seems to have disappeared!

I started with paddling around our harbour as mentioned above, which I really enjoy for the tranquility & fitness and recently caught my 1st ever wave (although probably only a 6" runner!) I've never surfed, and I'm very conscious that there is surf etiquette, also with 3 young kids I make sure that I sup away from others as I'm probably in the 'kook' class you guys mention...although we don't have the crowded beaches, and I've never witnessed a close-call let alone an incident.

Looking forward to trying out some DWs (after watching some of the vids posted here) & (slightly) bigger waves in the near future. I also take my family to the river on the odd weekend, so rather than hiring a canoe it will be sup for me all the way!

Good times!
