.....and this only yesterday;

manateecounty.wtsp.com/news/news/118120-police-trace-clues-missing-tampa-paddleboarder

Maybe the opposite end of the spectrum. The coiled leggys don't tend to drag.....amd we should all have a quick release plan in action, especially those with a surfing background.

I almost drowned last month not wearing a leggy in flat water as I lost my OC 1 and the wind got to it and kept taking it away from me for over an hour, after 80 mins of swimming, I was spent and was struggling......had I a leggy it would never have happened.

I'll never paddle without one again and always have a bumbag PFD on me other than in waves.

Lesson learnt.

I do, others don't. You have to balance the risk of entanglement or wrap versus chasing a fast-moving board through whitewater. If you do, attach the leash to your life jacket not your ankle. If the leash wrapped around a rock you might not be able to reach your ankle. Make sure that you have a quick release that can be activated under load.

That is so funny Boofy.

I have been in a tiny pushed into willow trees by the current many a time while fishing the upper goulburn river in VIC and to fall in the water at that time would be certain death.
Rivers are just like the ocean always show respect and to be educated with your surrounds.

Its funny Weiry how you think about these sort of things when you become a dad, nothing like the good old days whitewater rafting in Bali off my nut with a litre bottle of "arrac attack" stashed in your back pack there were some serious OHS issues back then

Usually I don't use a leash, but after reading what can happen on flat water I think I'll change my mind and start using one.

Thanks to all.

My point was that maybe it's not a good idea to use a leash because the dangers might outweigh the benefits.

I'd be interested to hear what others think about this.

DJ.
I spend 50% of my time SUP surfing and 50% either ocean paddling or flatwater paddling.
I always wear a legrope (hate leash) when surfing or ocean paddling. I see this as a safety issue for myself when ocean paddling and others when SUP surfing.
I never wear a legrope when flatwater paddling.
I agree that if you are paddling adjacent to trees or submerged obsticals your legrope could become tangled and cause a safety issue for yourself.
I often paddle in or out of Noosa river, there is a section that has a very fast current with submerged tress that have been washed in. A trail;ing legrope could easily be caught on these obstacles. with the strength of the current you could be pulled off your board and have some difficulty.
I think a plan needs to be in your head at all times as to what you would do in a situation. Given you can't plan for evrything, but some prior thought is always handy tool.

In the Tally and Currumbin creeks I don't bother but in the seaway or large expanse of water if its blow'n I do and in the ocean allways.

Depends on the river and the conditions. There's a huge difference between paddling in Currumbin Ck or the Yarra and say, across the Derwent river. Personally I dont wear one on rivers (I would on the Derwent though)

Flat water - Never for that very reason especially in a current.

I'm qualified in Swift Water rescue and we use a quick release waist belt similar to the one DJ posted if we do any rescues where we are attached to a line.

Something to think about. Water moving 5 kph exerts 15.5 kgs of pressure on a body. Water moving at 10 kmh exerts 61 kgs of pressure on a body and at 15 kmh the pressure is 168kg.

If you get tangled in an obstacle in moving water then the chance of you coming back up is slim.

Nikki Gregg was saying that 3 people have been killed recently on rivers in the states, but my understanding is this was in whitewater. I guess as a rule thats a pretty dangerous thing to do. I tend to wear a leggy if Im paddling the surfboard even in flat water but don't as a rule wear one if Im on the race board.
