Yes.. I would at least put some electrical tape on..

It's pretty cheap and easy to do..

I used to use white tape because it leaves no marks on the board.

Hitting two hard surfaces together is not going to last well :-) Especially with carbon, which is very stiff and brittle.
Having some tape in between (or rail saver, or an ABS edge, ...) will extend the life of the board and the paddle. Plus your toes will thanks you when they get hit :-)

I put the tape on mynew paddle over the weekend, i have a much better piece of mind that neither the paddle or the board will be damaged in the event of a comming together.

No.. None of it is needed.. But I would recommend some kind of tape protection on your paddle blade.. Electrical tape works fine but I found that it gets nicks and tears very easy and needs to be replaced every now and then to keep it looking good.. I have found that this new RSPro stuff not only looks better than electrical tape once it's on there's no need to continually replace it.. As far as the board goes rail tape is not needed unless you are a rail wacker when you paddle.. I don't hit mine when I paddle and never used to use it but sometimes I let others ( sometimes total strangers ) have a go on my board and I hear "wack" as they accidentally wack my board with their paddle.. So.. I have it for those occasions and sometimes on party waves you get a slight banging of rails and it nice to hear a dull thud sound with no damage rather than a crisp cracking sound of two glass boards touching.. It's also nice to be able rest your board on its side on concrete without scratching the rail.. I've only recently started using rail tape mostly because I think this new RSPro stuff is sooo much better than any rail tape that I've seen in the past that just looked like thick sticky tape that get nicks and tears very easy and starts to look ratty after a while but can't be easily replaced.. This new RSPro stuff stays looking good for ever.. and I think it looks pretty good on the board..
