...and considering most of us update our race boards at least annually (usually more often) this comprises about 1/3 of our average australian annual wage of $67,067

this is becoming a very expensive hobby!!!

Hey Ali and thats only race boards, throw in a few Surf Sups as well an it gets even more interesting, multiply number of SUPers in the family and see how it goes.

Luckily there is a black market for organs lol

You just need a 14' Glide and a 14' Javelin and you've got it covered imo..

I agree.. and a 19' Bark is quicker than the Jav.. but remember it's 80% the paddler and I reckon a good paddler on a 14 will be competitive with most.

The 14's are great race/dw boards that the average Joe can afford, store and transport.

So what you are saying is,you either need to be wealthy, own a sup store or be sponsored to be competitive, gee I can see the numbers dropping.

It sort of depends on why you're racing. There's five ways to win:

1. Be the best (these guys always win no matter what gear they're on)

2. Be the best in your class (however obscure that may be)

3. Be better than your mates (gear doesn't really matter as long as it's the same style as your mates have)

4. Be better than your previous time.

5. Have more fun than anybody else.

Is SUP taking over from racing bikes? Cyclists call them golfers (because that's where they should be). Fat blokes in lycra on $5,000+ racing bikes. Roll down beach road to a cafe. Have a coffee and a cake then sit there all morning sucking down energy bars and vitaminised water.

Ok I am the first to admit that I know squat about sup racing but I do see some good paddlers getting around training and racing on the same board - most likely because that's what they like and can afford and most of them do really well on that one board and don't seem to go changing race boards every ten minutes or have a quiver of any sort. I reckon big ups for the guys and gals who race within their means and constantly strive to improve themselves with whatever equipment they own in whatever conditions present themselves on the day.

yeah, macca smashes it. he changed from the jav to the glide at the last moment- good move.

he got ride of the day in my books, down the line on the glide

Macca is signed, he rides for roar

it's a shame he didn't have a 12'6 bop to use.i tell anyone who cares to listen, when he gets his technique better, everyone better look outyoung, fit and strong
some team should sign him up imo
cheers

IMO- I kind of agree with you BB....

I have an old DC which I train and race on- and honestly all I can afford. I like sup racing- its great! ..but my passion for surfing has seen the need for race boards take a back seat...

As long as you have a board and giving it a go.... doesn't matter if you have a quiver or a 14ft or a 12'6....

Totally agree with you Starlet. As long as you are getting out in races and giving it all go. Who cares what size race board you have. The Coffs Nationals coming up are gonna have all classes 12'6 , 14' and unlimited. So hopefully we will see more then 30 paddlers at the event this year.
I will start another post with all the details on the races.

If you are talking about me then I didnt intend to show any admiration for any dw board - just at the people who are doing so well on the one board. And yes I have had a million sups - but I do not and never have proclaimed that any of them are so much better or worse than another and I pretty much do what I do boardwise without shouting it to the world - to me they are just boards - I ride them I sell them and I just go on my way quietly and without fuss.
