i have gone up to 14.5 " above my head for my dw paddle and found my 6" above head surf paddle feeling stupidly short. so i got one of those naish paddles and set it up at about 9.5". the paddles not bad at all- heavier than the shaka puu , but to be expected seeing as it's fiberglass. what really got me was the extra leverage in turns i felt i was getting because of the extra lenght .i did have to get use to swinging that bit extra lenght around
cheers

i grabed my daughters paddle by mistake the other avo its about 2 inches above my head .didnt have enough daylight to change so kept going, paddling was really weird but when i was on a wave it felt really good .my surf paddle is 8'' im thinking about trying one about 5 or 6 now.

that's what my shaka is noel. i was happy with, but as i said after the long dw paddle, i felt like a hunchback.thinking of going with the naish long for messy- more bracing power and shaka short for the nice days. each persons different, which is a good thing

I still think that the length of surf paddle is with the start of blade at eye height. Not to long and gives you some lever if you need in the turns.
I think for me anyway that standing with arm out stretched to the fingertips is good for a down wind paddle, I ride a 14glide, each to their own but I think we are all in the ball park with those measures. Ideally I would have 10 paddles for all the variables.
