phew where to start so many out there these days.

If you can demo before you buy, that is the single most important piece of advice I can give you.

Without knowing the finer points of your situation would suggest:

(Boards I have actually ridden in this area)
Starboard 11'2
Naish 11.4
JL 10'6 (?) (think that is the length)

(Boards not ridden but heard good things)
PSH (Paddle Surf Hawaii)
Tropical Blends
Dale Chapman (Custom)
Laguna Bay

Good luck and have fun

Cheers

Zimbo

I believe there is a shop in Bicheno that sells SUP - see what they have in stock there. Sorry can't remember the name but try this: www.lmgtfy.com/?q=SUP%20Tasmania

Welcome LUFC!

Some brief points below from my experience of learning to SUP without any surfing experience, purchasing a board and surfing small waves.

I had around 9-10 hours of group SUP lessons on flat water before trying small waves. (first lesson nov 09)

I listened intently to my SUP teacher and practised 2-3 sessions a week.

I used an NSP branded 11'6 board that was 31" -32" wide for around 20 hours (including small waves) which came with my lessons.

I ended up buying a 10'6 board x 29inches that fits perfectly into my present skill set- and should do me for another year or so.

- As Zimbo says, Demo some boards... Good luck and let us know how you're progressing...

Cheers frog

I have recently purchased the Naish 11'4", it is beautifully simple for me to paddle and is quite possibly the most relaxing thing I've ever done. I'm an avid surfer but have not yet (not even close actually) managed to surf on it, I have tried only twice. I am a smidge over 100kg's, usually hover around 104, and I can have any of my kids on the front of the board quite easily on flat water :) They love it.

I chose the 11'4" over the 10' mana because I wanted some degree of separation between my mal which is 9'3" and my SUP.

I did demo some other boards, and only chose this as it suited me.

Good luck lufc

Hi lufc (Liverpool?), I would add the Coreban Rockett 10'6 to the above list. It is the board that I started to SUP on (in Dec 09), so I am a novice too. I weigh 90kgs and have found it to be great on flat water and in small waves. I have only ridden it in waves up to about 4 foot but it has been excellent.

As everyone always says - demo demo demo before you buy.

Hey mate - get in touch with Brian at little island surfboards on the east coast. He has a wealth of experience and will point you in the right direction. He should also have a good range of boards you can try/buy. If you cant find a number for him let me know and I will chase it up for you and pm it.

(my 2 cents worth - for the kind of conditions you will generally be surfing/paddling in down there I would have a serious look at an NSP - great value for money and tough as nails)

Liverpool? You could honestly get stabbed in South Yorkshire for even suggesting that. Maybe not stabbed but the Leeds United fans are amongst the nuttiest on the planet.
