Hi there- I am looking at getting into a SUP. I used to surf years ago but want to get into this sport. Juat wandering what board size would suit a beginner 180cm 80kg, I am wanting to eventually put it in small surf. I have been looking at the Evoke range- they look great. Is there anywhere you can buy them near Brisbane QLD . Thank you
I read somewhere that double your weight in volume is a good starting point, for instance your 80kg x 2=160l volume.
However, I'm riding a 130l 8'6" x 30", and this is plenty stable enough for me - I'm similar size to you. Prior to that I was riding a 10' by 32", but i progressed out of that in about 2-3 months.
IMHO I'd be looking for a used Fanatic Allwave, say 9' by 32" if you can get it, and maybe a 2013/14 model. They should run under $1000 used, and its going to be a lot better than a brand new low end board. I put a paddle blade through my cheap board - massive ding, cost me $100 to repair. The surf is unforgiving and you definately want a quality build when you are venturing into the waves.
However i've heard good things about the Evoke, and you cant go wrong when you are beginning. Any board and paddle will do, when you get addicted, you'll be keen to invest in the quality gear.
