Shark scare stops bridge-to- beach swim

The spate of shark attacks and shark sightings in Sydney has forced organisers to cancel a popular ocean swim, amid fears the water could be too "bitey".

About 300 people were expected to swim in the 11-kilometre Bridge to Beach race from the Harbour Bridge to Manly Wharf on March 15.

But it was cancelled after a flurry of queries from concerned entrants.

Due to the recent increase in shark incidents and sightings in and around Sydney Harbour we have decided to cancel the swim leg of this year’s Manly Wharf Bridge to Beach. Unlike most ocean swims our event sees entrants spread over 11km of Sydney Harbour in sections where large sharks have been spotted in the last fortnight. We are unable to implement adequate preventative measures over this sort of distance and therefore have taken the difficult decision of cancelling the swim for this year. We are still conducting the paddling event and invite you to participate in that if you wish.

I think the fin as it was a big old cut and it also sliced my wetty open on the shoulder!

Staples came out on Monday and I can get wet on Saturday.

50/50 on the paddle as I have no fitness at the moment.

The only thing I didn't enjoy was being told you have make your legs work for the 200m run at the finish.

Was it you Ben who did the paddle on the PSH? If so great effort as 11km on a surf oriented board with no wind or chop at your back must have hurt. Also well done to Jeremy who slogged away on the same board he drops in to the Longy Bombie on.

The white pointy one Adam Quinn's Naish Glide. He's put some 15 year old slalom fin it. Nice setup but it was his second paddle in 6 months and 15 mins in he realised his dodgy shoulder was still as dodgy as it was 6 months ago.

got out to little manly with the family, and even michael had a go he was pleasantly surprised about the experience too

Conditions for the event was almost calm at 2-5knots with a fair bit of random boat chop making things a bit wobbly.

Clint Robinson won overall on a ski in a time of 44mins and 55 secs with Yanda Nossiter the first women in 54.27.

First outrigger was Lucas Gamgle in 54.59 and the first outrigger female was Susie Wood in 1.07.53.

In the all important SUP division this is how we finished:

Not too sure about the other 2 entries listed. I think they may have been prone paddlers who finished just in front of Steve. I don't think they had their own category so they were probably told to go with us.
