Jeeez.. Wot a bummer!

Contact Sam and see if she can send you a new shaft.

That'd be the best way to fix it.

Do you want her number?

Hi Cam,
I successfully (so far!) rejoined a paddle-shaft by the following method. I bought a 25mm diameter pine dowel from Bunnings, then cut off about a 100mm length. It was a bit narrower than the shaft, so I built it up with fibreglass cloth & epoxy resin (i.e. one single wrap epoxied on, still too narrow, so applied another). I then sanded it, made sure it was a snug fit, & glued it with 5-minute araldite. The join is near the handle & so far after several uses (but not in big surf) it's held. I may permanently join it with 105 epoxy resin in the near future. I don't expect that the 5-minute Araldite will hold with continued usage. The dowel's really light so the weight increase is not noticeable.
As DJ said, they may replace the shaft under warranty. I'd try that first!

p.s. my repair was with a hollow shaft of course. I didn't notice before but in the photo it looks like your shaft is filled with some sort of foam material??!! What's a "methane paddle"?

the shaft is hollow, its just a trick of the light, it made a good crack noise (and I was under water at the time!), methane is a style of paddle by Kialoa, search for it on this forum, they are really good except when they BREAK!

Hey Cammo,

I have seen Dave Boyd from Imperial Surfboards fix a few paddles and he is really particular but even then you get a varing level of success.

How did you break it?

One of the local guys Sam is a huge unit and he snaps paddles like twigs lol.

We have sourced the shafts directly from marine suppliers and you can also use old windsurfing masts of similar sizes to sleave broken paddles both outside and inside and that works better than most strategies.

But in short they will neva been the same.

Me thinks send the paddle back to Kialoa and see if they can fix it or maybe send it to Woogie???

Regards

Phill

FYI

All repairs to CFRC are considered secondary bonds, meaning the integrity of the repair depends on the adhesive properties of the repair resins or adhesives. The application of the part is probably the most important consideration. CFRC parts made for structural purposes are generally replaced when damaged. There is no way to guarantee that the repaired part will have the same strength as the original part.

Normally paddles break by hitting the board when someone falls or just being totaly over stressed when paddling into waves on the drive if your a big unit.

From some shots when I was paddling the laird I used to get 7 - 10 inches of flex in the shaft of the NEEEXT paddle shaft and it would seriously creak and groan.

A guy in OG is 130kg plus and he just makes paddle shafts look like spaghetti when he drives a wave, no matter what make it is.

The methane just puts the power to the ground with little flex. The ovaloid shaft of the meathane should mean its really hard to break , but obviously it is possible.

it was a fair sized wave, paddling on to it the paddle seemed to 'give' a bit in the area where it cracked, did a bit of a floater and came down hard, on the way down I heard a good crack, I'm not sure where it connected (me or the board) but it was in the whitewater.

trying to convince bride she needs a new methane my size now........

thought I'd let you all know that Kialoa (Sam Williams) is going to replace the paddle, how good it is that, I am totally stoked with their aloha and customer service.

I have snapped 2 paddling; one took a sizable chunk out of my thumb, and yes they make a loud noise ask Windy he heard one go.

Both replaced under warranty. Starboard and Select.

Cammo...love your Avatar....

Nice that Kialoa is standing behind it. Second time this week i've read of them replacing one without question. Most of the top manufacturers seem to be pretty good about replacement. I broke the blade on my Werner and they were going to replace it but I had already fixed it.
