Im thinking of buying a old racing ski and trying to convert it to sup , as i cant afford , or to put it another way my wife wont allow me to spend over $2,500 on a racing sup.Does anyone think this would be possible.I have some ideas mainly flatting the deck and maybee extending the width.Ive found a pretty decent ski for around $400.00 Bucks.

Cheers

I have been thinking about that this weekend. The clubbies are here for the aussie titles and I have been looking at their big ski's and thought about cutting one up the middle and making it a bit wider. I imagine they would handle ocean paddling well.

Hi Teatrea, you will definitely want to make it wider, especially under where you stand and through the flatter part of the hull IMO, ski's are pretty tippy and that's when you're sitting down.
I think using an existing ski as a mould and widening off that would be the way to go. You would also want to lower the deck a fair way to make it easier to balance.

Thanks for the reply guys , my idea is to cut the deck out and lower it a bit and maybee for a few feet where i stand have a type of outrigger on both sides , not in the traditional sense of being an outrigger but a stabilizer type set up.

Any way i think ill have crack at it.

Teatree, I'd be really interested to see how it turns out. I have a sit on top sea kayak, a performance oriented one (ie. fast and long), as opposed to a flat wide fishing kayak. I have thought about trying to use it as a stand-up craft also, but I think it will be way too narrow and tippy. Your ideas about stabilising outriggers of some sort appeals to me.....

I think you might find it a bit hard to do.Too much work to be done IMO.

Racing skis are really narrow for speed and pretty tippy as well.

You might be better to save more and hunt around for a secondhand SUP or an old windsurfer which alot of us started on.

Good luck

One of the foot pedals is probably pressed forward.
