Over the last few competitions I have developed a dry cough after heavy exercise, feeling paranoid, i did some research, as it happens with a little self diagnosis, it seems that it may be asthma. Interestingly I noticed today at the RPS event a number of competitors coughing and maybe suffering from the same symptoms. I had a few puffs of the ventilon when I went home but still have the wheezing sore chest, anybody else suffering or is it time for checkup and to upgrade the will....

Always best to check mate but I certainly feel as though the lungs had a big workout today, no wheezing but more a "just breathed in ammonia feel".
Asthma is usually a wheeze mainly on breathing out, so if it is happening on both inspiration and expiration then defs get it checked

give away the smokes!!!

I had a bit of a cough afterwards today too.
I reckon the heavy breathing required when sprinting like that loosens any snot you have in your airways and causes the cough....either that or the layer of snot that is meant to line your airways is removed and that causes it.
But I aint no expert!!

Ockanui, I've had a chesty cough after my last 2 races also. Maybe it's an age thing.
A big tip though...don't take much from the internet. It's a great way to learn but medically, absolutely everything is on there and much of it is incorrect. if you're worried see the doc.
I think Dr Deano might have something. Must be those paddles with the physics degrees he's using.

Hi MJ

I have just found this on the web, as you know I was coughing a lot today. After the first race I had the blood tast in my mouth and had no idea what it was, as I wasn't coughing up blood. Anyway the following is an interesting read. This has also never happened before but I do cough a bit after runs when I'm not fit.

This also doesn't happen when I do long down winders.

Cheers

Chris

Re: Tasting blood / coughing after hard workouts

Ever since I can remember (i.e., since I was a teenager, and maybe even earlier), I've tasted blood after intense workouts, and I often end up coughing for a while as well (i.e., at least a few hours after the workout).
Hi Celeste nothing abnormal about what you describe the great thing is this shows you are pushing yourself hard & forcing your body to adapt to the workouts. The blood taste or copper metallic smell usually happens after an anaerobic workout or if you are not aerobically fit. It comes from Haemoglobin (red blood cells) that are high in Iron (hence the metallic taste or smell) releasing gases into the lungs which intern you will exhale & smell or taste 'blood'.
For anyone that starts coughing up actual blood go straight to the emergency room & get help.

I'm an asthmatic and I feel the wheeze when breathing in.

My neighbour is a paramedic and he says asthma is the no. 1 cause of patients kicking the bucket while in the ambulance.

Best to go to the doc I recon
