I have been considering trding my 12.6 starboard in and getting the 11.2. It however only has a single fin. I wonder how they surf in fairly steep waves if I want to nose ride. Do they drop out?

Hi elbeau...Welcome aboard..

Trading the 12'6" for the 11'2" sounds like a great idea.

As for the fins...1 fin..2 fins..3 fins..4 fins...I've even seen 5 fins...They all work ok.

I like single fins myself...I don't think it will pop out while turning on a steep wave..Is that what you mean?

I also don't see how it will effect nose riding...Some of the best nose riders ride single fins.

I'm no expert on nose riding or turning the 11'2" on steep waves...Greenroom or JB will know for sure.

btw...one of my friends has the 11'2" and he seems to have a larger fin than normal...I'll ask him if he changed it..and why...Here's a pic of his board.

Thanks DJ. My 9 foot mal kicks out on step waves without the "trainer fins". I thought the 11'2 might do the same. Joel Tudor doesn't seem to have a problem though. And I suppose I can always have fcs put in. Any starboard 11'2 riders I would love some feedback

Hi elbeau,

The 11'2 is an awesome one board set up. It has unreal glide so is well suited to flat water but the narrow tail also allows it to surf really well.

I actually prefer using a single fin on this board as it allows you to swing it around a lot quicker to catch waves and have had no problems with the tail dropping out in steep waves up to about head high.

I reckon it is only in the smaller boards that really need the thruster set up to help maintain a straight line when really putting a few hard paddles in when lining up waves.

The sport tech model does come with FCS inserts though if you are super keen on them otherwise it would not be a massive job for a board maker to whack a pair in.

If you are in Perth give us a call and we can arrange a time to meet up and give you a paddle on one.
