out was going with the tide and 15knot head wind southerly averaged 8km/ hour so my garmin said

back was against the tide halfway through the paddle the rain came hard and the wind dropped a fair bit and i averaged 5.2km/hour

The SPSC crew at Narrabeen Lake in Sydney have pioneered 5km time trials and I understand James Casey has the record for a 14' board set today - 29'30".

29'30" over 5 km is travelling at 10.17kms per/hr for 5 kms, that's moving.

There is a website, www.ridingbumps.com that is very helpful for sup and prone paddleboard training. They have great advise and training programs specific to the sport.

It all depends on the distance and the conditions.

For example, the Tour de France of SUPing just finished today, SUP 11 City Tour in Holland. It is a 5 days race, total 220km. The top 10 was paddling about 9-9.5 km/h in the Dutch channels. These are pure flat water conditions but the channels can be windy.

In the Mediterranean sea, where we have medium chop, the top racers paddle at around 8-9 km/h.

This year in Germany, the Lost Mills race had the "Fastest SUP paddler on the Earth" competition where the participants paddle 200 meters, pure flat water and Danny Ching paddled with a speed of 15km/h :-)

Mother supper, I am not trying to be controversial when I say this, it is how I feel.

Forget about the times and the distance it's not about that.

Just go out there and paddle. You will have a lot more fun if you don't put expectations on yourself.

Enjoy.
