My sup is up the coast so I cannot measure and the architect needs to know how high the new garage doors need to be. From road surface to top of my roof rack is just about 2 m. How much more must I allow for a sup on the roof? It is a pretty standard wave sup with a thruster set up.

Thanks for any help.

Depends on the board and fin you use..

Average surfing board is what 4 - 4.5inch's

Fin size anything from 4 -10inch if ya using a 2 + 1 setup

1 Inch = 25.4mm

Hi Lazarus - what sort of board do you have - what is the thickness of it? What sort of fins do you have and what are their dimensions.

I guess when you can tell us that info someone here from Mensa will add them together for you.

I drive a Toyota Prado with roof cage and need 2.05 to get in the garage. With board (downwinder) and fin I would need about 2.45 to drive in. I have 2.10. Forgot that once

I would think about the car you want now or down the track and build to that.

4.8 x 2.4 high is a fairly standard garage door opening. But always make the garage bigger than average. 7x7 is a good start with the garage, or 6x6.5 plus a 3x2 storage alcove.

Also, a larger door helps get 2 cars in more easily, with more clearance. So 5x2.5 for the door would be nice.

I think mine is 2.4 and with 2 down wind boards on a current model Suby Forester, I think I have 10mm to spare !

Maybe 2.55 or 2.6 might be good for you.

thanks. that does help. I have a pajero. Archietect wants to come down from 2.40 to 2.35, but that is no good. I will need to find a board and actually measure, but things (cars/sups) change.

and forgetting is expensive on fins/boxes/boards.

2.4m & 2.7m are standard heights, but many garage door manufacturers custom measure. Personally, I'd go higher if possible without detracting from aesthetics. Your 'architect' should know most measurements needed. If there is a weight-line you can align it with (window head height, transition in cladding, etc.) even better.

Sounds like it will be a tight fit, consider cutting the floor in to get the height...check your drainage first. Don't rush the decision, get your architect to look at alternatives.

2" inches higher than my garage door if you ever take 2 standups on your roof and use 9" fins

Don't forget to take into account any space taken up by the door when it's in the up position. I have a tilting door on a cantilever and it uses up a fair bit of space.

My board rack above the car also takes up head room. I always load and unload the boards out on the driveway.

Also, some segmented panel doors (Panelift etc.) do a reduced headroom door, should open to full height & requires less headroom than norm.

A panelift door will give the most clearance .If you have 400mm headroom your panelift door will open fully , so if you have a 2700mm high door that will be your walk in height.

The doors can be fitted in less headroom (230mm) but low headroom systems are not ideal for 2700 high doors.

Here is some more info on the openings from my web site http://www.pirieent.com.au/builderspecs1.html

Drop me a PM if you need more info.

just remember the garage ceiling height isnt the garage door opening height.....the garage ceiling height will be determind by a few things: door opeing height, door opening width and roof load will determine beam size over opening. So door opening height + beam depth will get you close....ovibously the thing that is important to you is the opening height so you can drive in.....there will be a range of off the shelf door opening heights for each particular brand of panel lift door, more than just 2100/2400 and 2700...if you have chosen a style/brand, find out the heights as it will be cheaper than a custom height, plus the builder needs to know.......one more factor, depending on how close your garage is to the front boundry may determine if you can have the height you want......roof design comes into play here and height of gutter/fascia from driveway....your achitech should know this.....relaxations can be applied for from your council for $$$

nb some panel lift doors require more room than others from the opening height to the ceiling...

I wouldnt think you need 2700 opening height....@ 2000 for car and racks, say 4 inch 4.5 thick board and 7 inch fin...that would be approx 2300 giving you 100mm clear

another important thing....the majority of driveways leading into a garage are rarely level......any incline or decline will throw the height out.....ie if you are coming down into yoru garage at say 15degree slope the front tyes will enter the garage and the rears are still back UP the drive, higher than the point at which the door opening is.....this will make the vehicle higher than if on level ground....you may need to allow for that....

Just tell us what kind of board it is. Maybe someone here has the same model and will know the measurements are. I'm assuming if it's a custom you would know the measurements anyway.

If Lazarus knew what sort of board and fins he had up the coast, there wouldn't be any need to post the question here - he could just google it.

My guess is that it would have to be double overhead or three foot if measured in Hawaiian scale.

you can't take the chippie out of a sup per

getting a door at 2700 high is going to cost you some dollars all round - ie your ceiling might have to be 3.3 height. it might even alter your house design. you are getting an architect to design your house so i'm guessing you have the brass to spend and architects have some great ideas, but be careful and get a whole cost evaluation for your 'sup friendly garage' door and then consider the cost along with your other 'customizations'. architects are nortorious for running amok with budgets if you don't control it
cheers

Thanks especially to Piros and Husq2100.

I want to keep the sups in the garage, so I dont want to take them out before hand and I dont want a van.

Thank you.

Allowing 5 inches for the board thickness and 9 inches for the fin is 14 inches which is 356 mm, so should get away with 2.4 m head height clearance.

Will let you know in July if it does not work!
