can any one suggest a good heart rate monitor, watch type, at a reasonable price.

i'm not after tracking. would like to be able to set a heart rate range.

would like the device to be able to indicate if i fall under set rate range or over with out having to look at it- pulse or sound indicators.

water resistant obviously

and anything else that might be relevant

cheers

Had a Polar 625x for exactly this, you can set the alarms and keep an eye on it pretty much as well as the display can be large, you can get cheaper models with the basic functions

Used it all the time for triathlon and IM training to stay in certain HR zones, I would then download the data and drop it into excel so I could see the impact hills have and ensure I stayed aerobic over long distances

Polar has great customer service and are based in SA, if you buy online I dont think they honour the waranty so beware of that

Fully water resistant just dont push the buttons underwater, tried it for swimming but it didnt work to well due to it not staying exactly where it needed to stay, should dig it out for suping, would be interesting to read the data after paddling or surfing on a sup. Not much good for shortboard surfing as the monitor needs to sit right on your heart

I could pretty much predict my HR before looking at the watch after a while and I think you would be the same given your level of fitness???

Hope that helps, drop us a line if you want more info

Yeah Polar is a good brand. My wife is a Triathlete and most have Polars. There is probably only 1000 models to choose from.

Don't buy off Ebay. Polar wont recognise the warranty unless you buy from an authorised dealer.

I've had a play with it riding bikes. They are a bit of fun and makes a workout a bit more interesting.

I've got one of these

Its a FT60 Polar.
Very reliable works well and does what i need without lots of stuff i dont.
I use mainly for cycling all i want really is an audiable alarm to tell me my heart rate is too high too low or just right, this does all that.

There is a great review here

Hi Laceys Lane mate truly you already know the story thats a mongoloid question. Buy the Garmin 310XT it has the heart rate monitor it does every thing you will ever need. The 310XT would wipe its a#se with any Polar Watch.

Hey Lacey,

Polar, Sunto, Garmin, Nike, they will all have something that suits what your after. But the fitness industry definately goes after Polar, made in Finland in the European so called silicon valley, same as Nokia. Tell us how you go.

I've had several Polars over the years, mostly for cycling, made the switch to Garmin 3-4 years ago and won't be going back. Go Garmin. 310XT or 910XT for paddling, look no further. Much better range of S/ware and onlines for analytics (if you want to get into that..IME the Polar S/ware is flakey as SAO biscuits) and the inbuilt GPS & related functions are actually very useful if you're training in flatwater & doing distances.
IME the Garmin displays are much easier to read, more customisable too and not having to send the device away to Adelaide every few months for a new battery is good news (was a big issue with Polar, not sure if it still is)

They sound great. But can you interface your heart rate seamlessly with the go pro footage attached to your Garth helmet cam?

It would be nice to to see your tracking on google maps with your heart rate natively displayed on your computer screen.

haha, adolf, you wont see any go pro stuffy thingies from me mate.

although tracking a heart rate on google maps as a sup per sees a 10 ft set of waves about to land on his head does sound and look interesting.

If you could send a small wire all the way from your go pro mount on your Garth helmet down to your board shorts and place your heart rate monitor firmly over the girth of your dick - now the results of that on a 10' wave could be interesting.

I wouldnt mind one of those Garmin watches for the same reason Lacey, I would be interested in what the results would be in a normal surf or downwind session.
