I've noticed a slight increase here in Melbourne and the last two years at the Mambo/Corona in Merimbula have shown a definite increase.

But.. worldwide it looks like a steady decline... On the other hand SUP is lookin' good..

I think all Google trends really shows us for most sports like Windsurfing and Surfing is that as a net user we are all becoming more informed. I ran a surfing site for a while and 90% of our traffic came from direct sources like bookmarks or address.

For example:

If you know NOTHING about windsurfing at all you might google the term "Windsurfing". Once you did that you might find a site like Seabreeze for example that has as much info as you might need.

You visit Seabreeze daily and learn as you go. Banner ads for Brands etc take you directly to other sites. You go to seabreeze via bookmark.

The fact that you no longer went to Google and typed 'Windsurfing' as a search means you have become informed. The Google trends does not monitor how many people visit Windsurfing sites as a whole only how many Google the term itself. Most sports like ours people learn quickly so while the trend may be less searches there could be more traffic on related sites.

If a companies marketing etc is working well eg Naish you would never Google a general term like Windsurfing, you'd just type Naish.

Sorry for being a nerd but this stuff interests me so I researched it a little.

statistics can be read however one wants. I think that windsurfing seems to have gone through its big times and its bad. Looks like it has reached a stage of treading water. I do think that the windsuping that is becoming more popular some people may go back to windsurfing. I was away from the sport for about 20 years and back into it with vengeance, between that and SUP I dont have any time to surf anymore.

You betcha....whenever the wind is too light for using a wave board the SUP gets a run with a wave sail on it and it's a ball of fun.

Not enough wind - then it's SUP'ing in the waves (not that I am any good...yet). Only been 6 months.

The most interesting thing about the windsurfing chart is the seasonal peaks. Obviously the Euros dig their gear out each summer and post like crazy then put their gear away and go skiing or snowboarding.

Search for "windsurfing, skiing, snowboarding" and the trends are almost perfectly complimentary, although the magnitude of the snow sports is much bigger than windsurfing.

Google does indirectly monitor traffic to web sites. The number of searches is only part of it.

Google has software bots that trawl through web pages and counts the number of links to a web site from other web sites. The one with the most links is the most popular. It then applies that popularity factor to the links so the most popular site linked to by the most other popular sites is even more popular and appears at the top of the Google listings.

Every time you post a link to a web site counts as another vote for that web site so the more people looking at and sharing and posting on a web site, the more it features in Google's results.

This is why forums often get strange posts for products. The link to the product gets multiplied by the popularity of the forums and the products get bumped up in the Google results.

Definitely think windsurfing is on the climb again. Its taken quite a few years for the old "equipment race" phase to go out the window and now with such wide, stable and efficient boards and rigs it is becoming more popular again. probably more so with guys that were into it years ago.
the advent of the gps thing is helping big time.
It is a great complement to SUPing, like others have said throw a rig on a SUP and go cruising or wave riding or just SUP when the wind is light.
Like Mr Bailey it got me back surfing again as with shot knees I can get up easier.

I am aware of how to get a higher ranking on Google. HTML coding like meta tags etc also help to increase your listing as a site.

You are confusing Google trends with Google search engine.

Google trends is more just statistics of how many people punch in certain terms to Google search engine. If you have a good search listing on Google people will find you when they search. Trends is just a statistics package of what people search for. As I said I think it just needs to be qualified a little and not taken as a pure indicator if participation.

I think there has been a bit of a return to the sport from some that may have taken some time off over the years, but not sure there is a huge influx of new people taking it up. It is can be quite expensive gear wise and can also be very time consuming.

We do now see around 20 guys out when there is some wind and swell at the Alley, which is an increase over past years.

Across the summer just gone there was a learn to windsurf event doing the rounds across australia, this was an initiative from an importer and a number of retailers and seems to have been quite successful.

I use to do a lot of sailboarding back in the mid 80's to early 90's. Cronulla on a good afternoon would have up tp 60 in the water and same at Gerroa (about 100km south of Sydney). Now there might be 10 if that. I would like to get back to it. Spent too much on SUP's lately tho.

Doggie, you sure are in the right place for it, you will find with your access to good conditions you will progress pretty fast. The conditions are the thing that holds back beginners on the east coast.

You do just hang on so that's gutsy effort.. I made one many years ago before you could buy them.. They can be used with a skate board and snowboard.. There was a similar type for windsurfing called the wind-weapon.. or something like that.
