I'm sorry Windy, don't like your chances much. There is some swell getting into big left at flinders, but it's hard to tell about the quality with the image on the cam.If it's no good there go to st andrews and rye backbeach and gunna.I just had a look on the triggerbros cams and even gunna looks flat.goodluck, hope you get some surf b4 you head home

i've moved over to vic now, just trying to find a place to rent, hoping to convince the missus to get a pad down this way instead of the big smoke.,,, chances are minimal though

Sounds beautiful! My old man and I had the peak at the St Andrews carpark to ourselves about a month and a half ago on a tiny swell. It was a fantastic place to SUP, I just think the 12 ft'er I was riding wasn't best suited to little punchy peelers that were rolling in. I'm hoping to get some more small wave sessions in down there soon

What you mean dick heads?

Hey Windy,
What was the golf course called? Maybe I can tell you what beach you were at. Generally speaking the better banks are at Gunnamatta but also a better quality of surfer (mainly shortboards). St Andrews is pretty consistant as well. Rye is up and down with sometime really good banks but usually lesser quality with more average surfers. But a hint if you launch at Rye and paddle down the beach to the right you will find good little A frames with no one out. This will keep the shortboarders happy as well but you will also have more fun!

Knock me back into line if i'm getting too far off topic, but has anyone thought of SUPping/already SUPped Cape Schank? The wave setup is unreal for a SUP, but it'd be a bitch getting it down the cliff there

not sure on the name of the golf course, but a local told me the break was called the gunnery.

i sent a pic to GR, maybe he can upload it off his phone...

i was going to try gunna's until someone told me it was packed out

hopefully go again tomorrow and try and score the bigger waves out the back in front of the cliffs. i'm thinking this might be flinders big left??????

Hey windy
Shame you didnt get to Portland. Sounds like you were at Flinders to me. Were at Port Fairy did you surf? what was it like?

I reckon theres another good wave near Rye & st andrews called Gumboots, and another good spot may be Tiber st poles.

The Gunnery has a car park at the top of a cliff with steps going down to a very reefy break. There's a ferkin big gun (hence the name) right next to the car park which is at the entrance to the navy training gun shooting thingy.

Big Left is a little further south/west and there's a car park down on the beach. You paddle out through a lagoon in the reefs to a break 500m offshore. The prone surfers park out the other side of the gold course and walk down and across the reef for a shorter paddle out.

Big Left looked good on the web cam at 9:00 (low tide) but was not breaking later.

I'm surprised the Gunnery was breaking with nobody else on it. It's always packed.

I've paddled from Big Left down to the Blowhole and back. There's heaps of breaks but they're pretty close to the reefs. I got a bit scared trying to take off.

Yeah Brooko, paddleing to the right from Rye will take you to Gumboots. Easier than carrying a SUP through the sand track. That walk even sucks with a 6' shortboard!

Hey Windy,
from your description it sounds like you are spot on where you were, the gunnery and tomorrow big left.
Big left will probably only work around the low tide due to the small swell that is running at the moment. You got a tide chart yet?

willmcc1, thought about Head Injuries at the Schank but the cliff is a death trap. I've thought about trying to find a way to paddle in cos some days it's the only place that is working (if wind is SE). But haven't sussed it yet.

Miller called me when he was leaving the Fairy which Im spewing because I have a mate who lives there. He didnt take any photos and could only describe the place where he surfed.
So I called my mate and he was heading out for a surf and took this photo of Gabbos? I think this was one of the places Miller surfed?

Yeah I surfed open beaches today from 7am till 11am and very suprised Big Left was even breaking. Open beaches were 1' to 2', about chest high on the sets. Big Left must have been knee high but cos it was a reasonably low tide still broke.

It was head wind so about 45 minutes down and 20 minutes back. Big Left was crowded and there was a bit of a breeze and it was my first surf in ages so I went for a paddle to warm up and get the skills happening again. I stopped for a wave at Cyrils on the way back then got back to Big Left and the crowd had thinned and the wave had cleaned up nicely.
