Great effort windy on ya first downwinder mate. I am yet to experience my first. Must have felt unreal. Good to get the Mrs involved as well. Have a great new year mate.
148 reads and only one comment. Fair dinkum some blokes should give themselves an uppercut or 20. Do they think they are too precious to comment. I am all for encouraging our fellow Breezers. Grab a GoPro and save the memories.

I've got a spare 12'6 sitting in my garage and am only a couple of blocks away from mets, let me know if you want to take it for a spin and get a real taste of DW'ing.

I don't think Miller will be needing a DW board anytime soon. It's time for him to get a gun

I went out on my first real downwind today, with 20-30 knot SSW blowing into Gunnamatta. The up wind was a slog, however, the downwind was well worth the effort. I've had reservations about my ability or if I was ready, so have not really ventured out in the windy stuff until today.
I'm wondering now why I left it so long. I have a few tips / observations for anyone else that is just wishing to do some downwind paddling but like me is not yet ready. I'm no expert, just a beginner at this type of paddling, so these are just my own observations:
1 - Get out there and do it, and do it now.
2 - Fall off, and try and do it early, so that you wont be tense and nervous about doing it again - you will do it again.
3 - Paddle upwind and across the wind and waves as much as you paddle downwind. This will give you confidence and improve your balance VERY QUICKLY. You need to experience what waves / wind / swell feel like from all directions. Paddle figure 8's if you need more confidence. This will all make you a better paddler and inspire confidence in your board.
4 - Stand back on your board. You need to be much further back than you think when trying to catch the runners, and you need to move around a lot more than paddling flat water.
5 - Fall off some more and smile all the way to the car.
I'm now looking forward to my next episode when the graphs show up little green arrows.
Hope I've inspired someone else to give it a go, the only person holding you back is you. (or me)

I think he means Sydney... I assume he went in from Gunnamatta Rd or Tonkin.

Might try this tomorrow although it doesn't look nearly as windy as today.

Um, Gunnamatta is in Vic. Jason must be visiting. (?)....
PS - I wouldn't have called that 20-30 today !
South Channel Island is the windiest place around here. Topped out at 15-20 Max. It was more like a 10-15 day to be honest. But Justin & I had fun in some bumpy stuff today though.

Windy, get a bigger board up ya !!

Nice one! A word of advice - make sure you always use a leggie, especially in anything over 20 knots. Time in the water is what makes the difference so keep on keeping on.

DJ,
Was on a 12'6 Coreban Alpha.

ShireSUP,
Got in at Darook Beach, paddled out past the white pin off of fisheries and back, and out and back and out and ........you get the idea.

n8wx,
Looks like tomorrow will be a bit calmer, but who knows, things change. Looks like later in the week when it swings around to the North before theres another good blow.

Bit of a hassle getting to Darook I find Bay Lane the easier.

I've mapped the places I go out which have close parking & quick access to water...

Nope I think you have it covered, baylane works, i went from Darook on Thursday before I found bay lane, but the walk up was a bitch with a 14' board. I normally go from lugarno ave

One to also think is go straight accross from fisheries to the point between bundeena and simpsons bay and then paddle the coats to jibbon and then back on the wind to fisheries

i reckon the best place to go out is at the end of Bell Place off woolooware road, straight into deep water, darook park is a pain at low tide!
