Every time I go out surfing at my local, (like yesterday) I always offer my board and paddle to a mal or short board surfer in the surf, many have questions or are curious about SUP, so I let them have a go. The majority are suprised at how hard it is to stay up-right or even to paddle around and manovure my board (a 11'2 standboard) through the line up.
So yeah SUP does seem to break down barriers and doing this brings respect to all water users. Share the stoke I say!
Had similar experiences...I've never surfed, but am finding it surprisingly easy to get up & going on flatwater & even catching small waves/runners. I've lent my board to a couple of pretty good shortboarders & was surprised to find that they struggle a bit with getting the balance & catching waves. (Which, from a beginner's point is good for my ego

).
