Stockton and Blacksmiths.
That's where the grommets learn, so be careful.

Ditto for Stockton. Berubi and Fingal can also work.

Stocko and Blackies are protected from southerlies and tend to have smaller swell. They work best in south to west winds, but can be OK in SE wind.

Birubi is strictly offshore in north to NE winds, and can be very crowded. It also has a lot of close outs. If the swell is up, or from the south it can be a nightmare to get out, and closes out with a hell of a thump. Excellent for the capable.

Fingal is much like Stocko and Blackie in that it is protected in the southern corner, but closes out along the beach. The far end of Fingal has 'the spit', which is bloody dangerous with any kind of swell, having waves break from both sides, and forming a maelstrom in between. The beach on the other side of the spit (Grannys if I recall correctly) is again very protected from the south, but also closes out.

If you haven't surfed before the small closing out waves are OK, as it may take some time to progress to riding along the wave.

Good luck.

Jim.
