What's the general concensus for racing these days. My shoulders are hurting a bit, shaving a bit of the paddle may help?

Being running just under half way up my forearm for quite a long time and feels pretty good.

Tea Tree I was suffering a very sore back and lengthened my paddle slightly and have seen a big improvement. I have an adjustable section that I can re heat and glue to try different lengths. I use the Fanatic carbon with a longer handle insert. Ke Nalu also have a similar feature.

I'm thinking the right length for racing should be about half way between what you normally use for flat water and what you use for surfing.. and that's usually about half way up your forarm.
