I've been lucky enough to have a few surfing spots more or self to myself over the past months, I went out today and had a great session in two foot less than ideal conditions 10knott S/W (cross shore, with bumpy lines), and after went to a cosy spot with clean 1 ft. Lately a bit of a dilemma is starting to form within me..... should I just get to the best spot and wait or just go for whatever will work for where I am at the time. It seems whenever I go for anything I often do quite well, however when I sit there in the good spot, I'll over think the situation and about 50% of the time I'll get something wrong.

What do you guys/gals do? look for the quality wave, or is it a numbers game?

Oliver, I just go there, and paddle! One of my favourite spots is Pt Roadknight. If there are small suitable waves, I surf. If it's flat, I paddle across to Anglesea, or trail a lure out the back. I would rather be on the water, whatever the conditions, than driving around and stressing about the 'perfect' spot.

Funny you should say that.... After I got back from my extended surf, I grabbed my other board and paddled to the sand island in the Inverloch inlet with my fishing gear and just went fishing for a couple of hours. I paid $15.00 for pipis - can't believe I did that. At the fishing store they told me everyone is getting bag limits of whiting and I was feeling lucky. The reason pipis are expensive is because whiting compete with restaurants for pipis now.

After about two hours I caught two toad fish and tons of weed.

I reckon I'm a bit towards a numbers man at the moment.

especially if they are free.
I have a choice of three spots within 1km of me two are beaches at walking distance and the other is a point 1km bike ride away. I always go the point.

The reason I thought of this topic is because supping is quite different to prone surfing in that you can get good rides from crap and you can catch crap with moderate fitness. In my mind I'd like to see myself as being a quality man. But for the time being I'm pretty happy being a slut, and ride anything, while I'm learning and have limited opportunities to get to the surf.

I'm no expert about all this but when I used to prone surf I'd wait and wait for the good waves..because it's a long hard paddle back out (for me).

But sup'ing I pretty much catch the first wave that comes along and just keep going in and out non stop.. ..maybe pick the best wave in a set.

Glad to hear you're a happy slut, Oliver.
Nothing worse than a grumpy one....

I rekon I got no less than 60 waves during 3 sessions at the Prom on Saturday. I worked it out to be a wave every 6 minutes. On my way home I was calling 70 waves but maybe that was a stretch.

It was only 2ft (A frames) on the sets and sooooo consistent. There were 4 of us out, 2 goofy and 2 regular and we all got about the same amount of waves. Maybe I got a few more. It was such a good day.

So for me it was quality and quantity but overall I would have to say I'm a quality person. I think in the beginning most would start out as quantity guys but as your surfing improves you start to look for better or bigger waves to improve and push your limits.
