recently someone posted a link to Stand up Zone.
www.standupzone.com/ the 1st Video in the surf session, Kent and friends, shows a rider that IMO has overcome a major SUP shortcoming. When even the top riders on SUPs (including Laird) attempt a re-entry they usually get the staggers. SUPs have so much bouyancy that the cascading wave will usually grab the board before it reaches the peak of the wave and turn it before the rider is ready. Short boards and even mals will surge into the wave and because of their reduced bouyancy reluctantly turn allowing the rider time to readjust. The rider turns the board there were as the rider of a SUP is forced to turn.
Note then the rider in red shorts and black top at 1 minute 35 of the video. His friend on the green board is very skilled in walking the board but this other guy in red shorts is a revelation. Why? Because he BOUNCES. You know that silly thing you see with short boarders trying to get through a flat section. Flapping and bouncing. Well it would appear it works with SUPS. Standup paddle boards have heaps of bouyancy. Jump down on them and they bounce back like a trampoline. He bounces the board as he turns giving it that extra lift. Like turning on the afterburners. Why not use that ability. It sure is working for this guy.
