i'm a tall guy and as a result have a tall paddle, it fits in my car ok but when i go on trips its a pain in the arse. I'm looking at making a holding clip to mount on my roof racks. has anyone got any pointers? or photos or thiers. i know theres some commercial options but trying the cheap way first

why??

the cheap option wont end up being so cheap when you loose your paddle at 100km/hr on the highway. Just go and buy the correct option for your roof rack and spend the time you would have trying to build something actually on the water.

just my opinion... but hey you know what they say about opinions...

You could probably go into a sailing shop, and get 2 bobbles, and 2 short lengths of shock chord, to make "bobble" style holders.... ???

or

2 short lengths of rope, and some boy scout knots....

They sell excellent "roof rack paddle holders" at the servo for about $6. Takes about 10 seconds to secure your paddle.

Occy-straps worked fine on the paddles for my parents goaties for years - never lost one.

I use two (short) occy-straps to put my SUP paddle on the roof when I have the young fella in the car.

When I the missus comes down the coast she doesn't like to share the front seat with the paddle and she won't sit in the back seat so the board has to go on the roof too.

My paddle goes in the padded paddle bag (say that 10 times real fast after a few chardonnays).

My board and paddle go in the board bag together and the lot goes on the roof with the lockable tiedowns.

Roof rack manufactures make an accessory for windsurfer mast that might work - not sure though as a paddle is some what thinner than a windsurfer mast. You can find them on the Thule website in the water sport section.

I use 2 velcro strips which wrap around the paddle and the roof rack then close on themselves. sort of like a legrope does. Just a home made solution but ive never had a problem with them and they are quick and easy to use.
