Hi watermen & women !

I live in France and I practice sup ; I like waves but my locations give us many possibilities to practice SUP race because we are in mediteranean sea you know... so many locations are flat and good for this kind of board.

but we 've got a problem ; we don't have possibilities to buy one 14 or 18' here ; one distributor here, who sell Bark sup, but the price, ouach !!

so, with my friend Antoine, we have decided to shape our personnal board, yes !!

we have shaped many boards like surf or winsurf boards, so we have experience and materials for this work.

we have found specifications like longer, width and others about the outline, but nothing about scoop.

we want to realise a 14 & a 18' ; the 14 for flat water ocean and lake with little wind and sometime chops, the 18 ' for flat water ocean and rivers.

the 18' will shape for Antoin, a solid guy with 180 pounds ( 85kg) and the 14' for me, 65kg.

so, we look for the scoop specifications like nose and tail rocker ; can you help us please ?
thanks you very much,
regards,
Joanna.

I think you should look at boards like the Starboard 12'6" Pin and Naish 12' Glide for your 14'er and boards like the new 17' Naish and F16's for the bigger board.

When you say scoop you mean nose rocker and tail rocker..If you can't find one to measure just look at as many pictures as you can..This should give you some idea.

Bark's 14 ft has 4" tail rocker and about 9" nose.

Naish 14 ft was just under 3" tail rocker and nose slightly under 9".

I've shaped several ranging from just under 2" tail to just over 3" tail, with noses in the 8.5 to 9" range.

3" tail and 8.5" nose is pretty average for a 14 footer.

Extend the 14 ft dimensions to find the 18 ft rockers.

hi,

thanks for your reply !

NC surfer, are you sure about these indications for the nose and tail rocker ? they are superior than our ahd sealion.... the nose rocker is 5" on it and it's a wave SUP... usually, a race rocker is flatener than a wave one, isn't it

when you say " Extend the 14 ft dimensions to find the 18 ft rockers.", how can I process to find that ? do you think it will be less or more than the specifications you give about the 14' ?

anyway, thank you very much for these indications !

I'm sure about the rocker numbers. Anything less than 8" and you'll stick the nose in the back of a lot of waves. This is not windsurfing. On a windsurfer, the nose rises as your speed increases and you start to plane on the tail. This does not happen on a SUP.

You extend rocker for longer boards by taking the rocker template from a 14 footer and just project the line farther, using the same curve. It ends up being more total rocker on a 18 ft board versus 14 ft. But the curve is the same.

If you like to paddle on flat water & light wind, no rocker needed
Much easyer to make.

Awsome, love it.

My next board is going to be something like this for harbour flat runs /swell long distance etc.

Would it work in a 12ft

You'd need at least 14'-16' to get a similar feel, depends on your weight.
I'm going to do one about 14' x 24" next

Hi joanna,
Have you try the french forum ?
http://standuppaddle.site-forums.com/matos-f5/sup-race-le-matos-t87-30.htm

hi lagoon,
yes I have read many things on it, but nothing witch can help us

NCsurfer : okay, I think I m in a trouble with the pics' SUP race...and also for me, a board wich have speed potential is like a slalom board in windsurfing : many rocker and no tail rocker.

but when I saw the LSD 'shape with no rocker, I m surprise and confuse...

about the 18', it will ride only in flat water like river or lake, not in downwind conditions, so do you think rocker must be like 9" for use in this program ?

LSD : how longer is your flat bottom zone on your 20' shape please ?
I find it 's really tense, isn't it ? you haven't kick tail on it ?

thanks your very much for your advice !

Hi Joanna,
That pretty orange/carbon is generaly for cosmetic use only, be carefull where you use it, the black stuf is carbon but the orange is nylon.
You can get carbon/kevlar.....its black/yellow, to test for kevlar try & cut it or hold a match to it it won't melt

hi mates,

the boards are ready since last week and we have tested them in french britany.

conditions : windy ( 25 knots), choppy and light swell, testers have had fun during two days ! we have tested also sup wave like a 7', a freeride 9' and a médium wave 10'10 in beautiful waves

you can read and see our adventures here....

before deck pads work..... left to right, the 18' and the 14'...

...the 10'10....

....in the "Swell Addiction" surf shop, in Brest....the decks...

...the bottoms....no rudder for the 18', but 2 asymetrics fin's and one single in front...

... riders are testing in strong wind !

the 14'...

the 18'...

..open ocean test !

.... return to the flat water ...

About the sup wave....

.... the 10'10 swirl bottom ...

.... the 7' with Ivan, the shaper..

....and his green ebony bottom....

all the boards are in linen cloth ( flax), colored carbone kevlar with glass finish ; pvc sandwich contruction on EPS foam core.

on the wave..... no comment !

and the 7' like a little mouse on his hole

I translate the tester's report and I send it here quickly !
