I was out in the drink the other day and four SUPs paddle out (its not often that we see them around here). After about 30 mins they all sat down. With this in mind, I was wondering what the differance is between SUPs and fat mals?

I would say they need to HTFU and StandTFU!

Ha ha, just kidding they can sit if they want. But I rarely or never do this as I usually have suncream on my legs. I find sitting on the board transfers this cream to the deckpad and makes it greasy and slippery to stand on.

I think its kinda rude to stand over other surfers in the line up. Even when Im talking to other surfers I sit down as to be at their level. Could be kinda intimidating? So I sit while waiting for waves.

I do the same..and for the same reason.

As for the difference.. One is normal mal surfing and one is SUP surfing.. Surfing a SUP board with a paddle lets you catch waves that you could not normally catch hand paddling.. and using the paddle while on the wave brings a whole new dimension to it.. Even the paddling back out becomes fun and easier.. IMO..

Spot on Greeny Sitting is cool whilst out for a surf on your sub, for starters it means your not being a pig and getting all the waves. A few weeks back I swapped my sub with a mate on a shortboard whilst out for a surf, even though the crew out on subs were all friends I didnt realise how intimidating It was lying on your guts looking up at these people towering over you with a spear in there hand Have a sit while your out and a chill and chat with the crew good vibes for subs

Coming from a longboarding back ground, I find that once your on a wave its very much like riding a mal,but as DJ said you can use the paddle for more speed and dig it into the face while turning! The only down side IMO is riding a board two foot longer than my mal's But the upside is paddling out the back and catching waves before the longboading pak [}:)] I really believe SUP has improved my longboarding skills, all the sudden my 9.4 mal is loser under my feet and turns like shortboard! I also enjoy the learning side of SUP,its refreshing!

Was out this morning and found it relaxing to sit for a bit and just enjoy watching some other people getting waves. Plus taking a break after a few hours out there is all good.

It all sounds relaxed and cool. It seems there is a bit of an etiquette about the whole thing. Seems to me from what you have said theres a bit to learn from the expierence. I might have to give a go.

Kind regards. The beast.

i sit when talkin to people, mostly cause i get self conscious that they looking up at my doodle, but my sup seems so wide that i just about bust a hip and dislocate a leg trying to straddle the beast... i've found sitting side saddle heaps stable and more comfortable

I realise there are deeper psychological forces at work here but I think its unreasonable to be expected to sit down just to reassure other surfers. By all means go ahead and sit down if you like but should you choose to remain standing its no crime and not even anti-social IMHO.

That said, I have seen how people look intimidated as they look up at you so I always go out of my way to be friendly.

I tend to kneel as it is awkward stradling the board and a pian in the arse trying to get back on your feet from sitting.

Apparently during SUP surfing contests you are not meant to sit down out the back, although I can't see why you would need/want to.

Your also not meant to kneel In any comp as well I personally think kneeling Is super gay and dont rate It at all, I think It would be fair to say you will never, ever see me doing Kneelie downs Look I can, and do stand , the whole session as well, but, coming from a surfing apprentiship (grommethood) I think manners and etiquete (sp) speak for itself, this is exactly where sup can get a goatboat name in the water, when In a pack with good waves and a crowd I will sit and have the odd chatafter I have had my quota

Thats a classic Brooko,
I'll never turn my back on a kneeboarder out in the lineup ever again.

if there is 3 or 4 sup's all surfing the same break its going to chew up most of the good waves anyway. I will let good short board riders catch their quota but as far as mals go its game on. Angry mal riders have been hogging all the good waves for years.

I either stand up or lay down.

But the interesting thing is that most of the guys that ride pipe kneel paddle out.

I agree. Yeah I rarely/if ever paddle on my knees. It's like cheating. But I'll kneel down sometimes out the back waiting for waves if there's surfers in the line-up.

I agree with 62 mac re:improved longboard performance etc ,and while there are many surfing similarities with short or longboarding i have to say the stoke of sup is like learning to surf again for the first time , a real buzzzz. Waves you would normally pull off of even on a longboard are easily kept up with because of your paddle. But i do kneel to have a chat between waves from time to time , what can i say its just sociable. Having said that if the waves are pumping no one whant's to chat.

Looks as though I'm gay and a cheat.

Fellow SUPer, this forum is starting to sound like the kiting forum.

At the end of the day we are all out on the water enjoying ourselves. Don't start hanging sh1t on others because they do things a bit different.

As long as we are all having fun and respect others WHO cares.

The only "rules" that count are the ones that stop people hurting others or causing others grief. That is, don't run people over and don't hog all the waves.

Standing, sitting, lying, sticking the paddle up your bum and wagging your tail, whatever works is fine.

Standing and riding over whitewater is pretty easy to do, but it would be stupid to do that and take a fall if you don't have the skill (yet) or are tired or whatever. The only imperative to stand rather than kneel is that you have to try it a few times to learn the skill.

Intimidating people because you're standing in the lineup is rarely an issue because you're usually 20-30 metres further out.

All this "... you can't do this or that because I think it looks gay...", is well, gay.

good on ya high as a kite bring it on !
at first i thought i wouldnt involve myself in this one because as usual the expert wanker forum gods were involved and spouting words of wisdom from their bogun and homophobic mountain tops .then i realized they were joking, right fellas ?
i'm the first to enjoy a piss take after all its the australia way but come on its 2009 !
who cares if you kneel , lay down , sit or paddle twirl hehehe, wear clogs or go home after a sup surf and enjoy some bum fun ( not for me thanks) as long as your having fun , that seems to be the real difference between sup'rs and the rest of the folks using the water, every sup person seems to have a grin from ear to ear fully stoked i everybody else seems a bit .....well....look their just not suprs and that that.
cant believe this all started with beatsurf actually asking what the differance is between SUPs and fat mals?
anybody?
