A quick pic of one of the boards coming from a new company on the gold coast focusing on premium Stand up Customs.
This one is my new 9'10 good wave board. Better pics up when its glassed.....

Hey Goatie,
No its epoxy (vh) with a 3 ply stringer.
Glassed up im looking at around 6 -7 kgs...
Really excited about these guys as they can make a board exactly to the specs (shape and matereials) you want.
I was thinking about going tripple stringer on this one for a more of a clasic feel, but i might leave it for the mega gun!!!!

The company is called DEEP OCEAN BOARDS. Its the stand up division of Dolphin surfcraft at Burleigh Heads.
The set up is great. You can design your board on the new 3D aps machine. See the final results before its cut. All the glassing is top notch and done in house. the guys have been doing skis and prone paddle boards for australias best watermen for years. And with Zane Holmes behind the healm you now the products going to be good.
Prices for a board up to 12' $1550
12' - 14' Open water race board $1750. Full Carbon version $2250.
The thing that sold me is that they work off "old school" surfboard ethics. you rock up with your old board. Tell them what you like and dislike about the board. And then work out a shape that you personally have input into..
Theyll have a stock 15 board range out by mid Dec, but if you want a board before xmas send me a PM and ill see if i can pull a favor or two.

Sprays are insane as well

The clubby fraternity have a habit of ripping off other peoples designs, lets hope common sense prevails here and when the punter comes in saying they want a new board identical to a production board they have in their hands they get turned away. (This is a general comment and not a dig at Dolphin)

Last weekend I was speaking to a well known QLD shaper who was approached by a customer to make a board indentical to our 9'3 subvector and full credit to the shaper he told him to buy the real thing. Full respect shown right there!

Gee, thats a bit of a broad genrelization about the Surf lifesaving industry. When one person might be copying molded pop outs and then getting them made as moulded pop outs out of taiwan.

How do you think the Australian Surf board industry survives??

Being in the industry for 20 years and working for some of the worlds best short board shapers, you see a lot of dodgy stuff from back yard shapers. Workman ship and good design weed out the crap producers and boards.
I went to to dolphin because i know a lot of the staff there are Surfers. I know who they have worked for in the past, and there knowledge in composites is A1. And i know who they will be having on board as shapers in the future. They dont need to copy anyones designs.
To me, its the next Evolution in SUP design. I know a lot of people dont like moulded pop outs (plenty who do) and want something different than whats been on the market from o/s manufacturers.
Bottom line, i like to surf and paddle. I want to get the best performance out of my boards. In turn i want to have an input into the shape of my board. Simple.....

Nah, not really. Its a strange one. I keep saying it. "ride what you want to ride" I dont really care.
I hear the "dont rip it off" speech all the time. Reply-Dont need too!!
I think a lot of importers feel that someones going to steal away a little slice of the pie............................

I love the dont rip it off argument.

Surfboard design, SUP design, sailboard design etc etc has always evolved around the successes of one design for a particular rider or group of people, usually high profile. I watched a surfers journal epi yest about Shaun Tomson riding a board noone thought would work at Pipleline. The result, the first guy to truly attack backhand at Pipe, his board allowed him the priviledge. Everyone laughed at him, yet the next year all of the boards shared the same characteristics. Was the design ripped off?

Don't even start on Simon and his thruster or Kelly with his banana boards.

No masterpiece was painted without inspiration the same as every board is inspired by another, either by what it did or failed to do.

Copying directly = BAD = Stalled design evolution.

Inspiration and the pursuit of even greater performance = GOOD.

That's why custom will always be the real king and riding stock boards is just riding last years designs. Many are happy to ride last years boards, they feel and may be correct that their abilities do not require custom or to be cutting edge. This mindset is a key difference between people from surfing and sail backgrounds.

It's interesting to see how it all evolves.........

many cant afford to buy new boards or have them custom made, especially in the sup format.

a custom board is only as good as the shaper/builder and imput going into it.

for example i wouldnt even consider a custom board, ive only been surfing since march and dont know anything about how surfboarsds work....so what imput can i give....

just remeber the big companies may be "pumping" boards out, but they also tend to have more money for well known shapers and R&D.....

for example its funny how people still say Naish are wind surfers......well im sure Robbie Naish, his brother and design crew have forgoten more about water craft design than alot here. Yes he is known for windsurfing, but id be happy to be able to surf like him!

nothing against custom, but i think you cant compare apples to oranges

Hey serg,
A custom can be as simple as " i want my own spray" or "my board is good but i want to surf it 6" smaller". A little bit of a freedom of choice if you will.
As far as shapers in Australia go. have a look at what boards have been winning every major contest in the last year and a half. No big industry $$ but a lot of underground chargers.
Not apples and oranges, just another option

Sorry i think it has to do with the rider more than the boards for the comps that have been on so far, just look at the guys who have won them and i'm sure they could win on either. I have riddin my far share of custom boards and they are nothing special and dont rip all over the board i ride now thats for sure. Most of the overseas comps i've seen have been won on production boards i think? and thats because a lot of the big name riders ride for a big company. I'm sure if billy or woogie or guys who are winning these comps where on a big brand i'm sure they would still be on top. JMO

Dont make me red thumb you.. i know you like the red thumb.......
Point was, serg felt that the bigger companies had the $$ for r+d and shapers. And that equated to a better board.
My point was shapers not employed buy big companies with lots of money can still make a competitive board. and the people that ride them have input into design(R+D). hence the comp results.
All i did was post a picture of my board. A board that was made like any other hand shaped surfboard over the last 60 years. Its not that complicated.
Should I post a reply about how i would ride that new 7'9 naish. but i wish it was a 8'3 (choice)
Its a new industry. a lot of new players. If you like your off the shelf pop out, go buy it, they work. If you want a custom go buy it, they work.
Id be the first one in line to buy the new 7'9 naish. if it was an 8'3.[}:)]
