Does anybody think combining spearfishing and stand up is a bad idea? I have been attempting to spear fish up the river (unsuccessfully so far) and my girlfriend thinks I'm mental. Apart from the obvious risks of spearing the board or my foot I cannot see the problem.

Not planning to go anywhere near waves with a spear in my hand, I will stay up the rivers where I can only damage myself.

How big is your SUP? I recon you would need some stability to get acurate shots.

I spear flounder with a handspear off my 14' sup at night with a light.

Handspears are ok but I wouldn't dream of using a speargun. Too many variables for things to go wrong.

My board is 10"6' and just using a hand spear, wobbles a bit depending on how hard you throw it, haven't fallen yet, but also not hit anything either.

i've paddled my sup out to a few reefs offshore and i just attached the paddle to the legrope, my float line to the legrope string and away you go and start shooting..

Just wondering, if you are yet to hit a fish (yet) can you really say you are actually fishing?

Also, do you need a licence? For fishing that is, and do u have health cover?

Aboriginals and natives all over the world have using this method for some time with great sucess.Try putting the tip of your spear under water before you shoot this should give you more of a true angle.

Andy, it sounds fun... I have been thinking of Bow fishing from a SUP for quite sometime. Had thought it could be a fun SUP option, but hadn't heard of anyone doing it [unlike Bow fishing from boats which is big time in the US]..I soon learnt it is enjoyed by Pono Bill and a few folk over on Stand Up Zone. I need many more SUP hours up first and then may give it ago - practice first on a dam on the farm, make sure I can do it and safely. Then when up North away from people try it out... In the mean time, I have been checking out rods and reels for SUP fishing and ordered 2 rods last weekend, that will be here in approx 2 weeks. Good luck with it...
