Has anyone seen the poll on the srosurf website asking whether sup surfers should be banned from populated surf spots? I'm aware that nearly all responses will be from surfers but interesting to see that 86% think sups should be banned from these spots. Anyone experienced any agro out there while suping from other water users?

No way as if anyone would surf populated surf spots.

That would just be down right stupid.

SUPers should just surf crap sucky beach breaks and leave the good waves to the longboarders.

As a surfer first and the new owner of a sup, i just cant see why it would be a problem. There is just so many spots you could surf on an sup that would be crap on a traditional surfboard why you would want to take an sup into a crowded line up anyway. I know a lot of surfers who are getting into sup, so as a surfer they should already know about respect!

You stirring again Bd...You know what I mean..

I'm not sure about up there but down here there's plenty of uncrowded breaks that are perfect for SUP'ing.

But then....I am looking at getting a few waves at Bells soon..I just have to pick my day..and time of day..

Yer well there is plenty of SUPers at the Alley,

We sit wide of the point break and pick up the scraps but other surfers always seem to find sumthing to whinge about.

And btw i was being sarcastic in my last post.

Yer DJ and Brooko theirs limited spots on the Goldy that u will find uncrowded waves.

Yer well DJ thats probably the equivalent of me surfing Snapper

Ben D .. did you think I was kidding when I said I was sup'ing at Snapper yesterday morning??? There was about 70 in the water and three sup's including me, apart from the one scrawny dude with the tug comment everything was ok, there was the old guy on the nana papa mal asking for a go every few minutes. BTW ... first full stand up catch and surf wave completed at snapper !

Nah i knew u were seroius, but i was thinking u might of got it uncrowded with the only QLD labor day holiday but obviously i was wrong and 70 other guys thought the same thing i did. (Maybe?)

Yer me and dad have SUPed Snapper when it was packed and the surfers seem to take it better than the surfers at Snapper, one old mal rider actually jumped on the back of my dad's board and they rode the whole wave.

at the alley on sunday their where sups, skis , learners kayakers and even a few boats trying to get the meager waves. No aggro though.Ive only had one prone surfer go aggro at me.From what ive seen at the alley the suppers share the waves no worries, but you get some mal guys want to take every set wave.

Hey Hawksie... thats why we SUP the spots we SUP. No one can surf them.
Ive paddled into the line up at Grabbers and 2nd Reef and had surfers give me the death stare[}:)]
But on the flip side when we were SUPing out at the retirement village last, I had all the old boy longboarders gob smacked and very talkative.
The key is to smile, say hello and stick to the lineup.
Even if the break doesnt have a line up, just hang back and your wave will come

went to a crowded spot the other week, and stuck to last man on the edge feeding off the scraps, still getting the death stare....probably because i was getting 5 waves to there 1...

A L S O

whats the unwritten rule....., if you make the early effort and are 1st to a spot then longies turn up, are u supposed to pack up and go home don't think so - they seem quite happy to mingle with you when your 1st out - so why not vice versa?

can o worms

Just came in from one of the best sessions eva at the alley. Only small but so many fun little waves and crystal clear water, blue skies and hot.
Had about 20 longboards and 4 sup's out and there was plently for all. Most of the time the longboarders where just letting them go for us sitting out on the shoulder.

Loved it, What a session!!

Gonna have some lunch and get out of a arvo. Not a breath of wind.

I was on the north shore (Oahu) recently, always sups in the surf, they sit on the spot like everyone else and the better sups got most of the best waves. I saw no ago or hassle of any kind regarding the sups, good to see some competition for the longboard crowd.

the real whingers are the mal riders
cause now they can be out paddled by a sup
just like a short boarder would by a longboarder

being a shortboarder at heart i have personally loved paddling straight past a group of weekend warrior mal riders with the biggest cheeziest smile and proceeded to nail every set wave that came through just like they always have done for years

revenge is so sweet

in the minnie water area there is about 10 surfers in 30 kilometres of coastline with beachies and points sometimes it is hard to find some one to surf with at all
poor me!!!!

all of my mates dont give a crap about me on the sup as i give them some serious side splitting laughter sessions when i go over the falls nose dive and get dragged for 30 metres to my death by my leg rope or nail the bomb set and kook it past them while they yell whack it you ****ter

even if they didnt like it they wont stop me cause i would just punch them out on the beach or hacked them to death with my paddle (just kidding)

my opinion :

when I'm out with other riders (mal, shortboards, other sups..) I sit, relax and wait for my turn (I think that sitting a little while after each wave is a great way to make SUP more acceptable for prone surfers, also, I reckon it's not really enjoyable to be sitting on a shortboard just next to a guy standing up on a huge one, it makes you feel small, really small ! that's when the death stares start to be thrown at SUPers !)

And if I get bored, I go for some cruising down the coast and I enjoy watching packed lineups with frustrated guys fighting for waves, SUP is freedom !

And those who don't respect the turns are kooks, regardless of what kind of board they ride ; there's nothing we can do about it, I just don't want to compete with them , I'm happy with less waves and bigger smile !

I agree with the sitting thing..(even if it means getting a wet bum)...it brings you down to their level rather than looking down on them.

I don't want to be known as a stand-up-goat-boater..

Hey dogman
I know your area well, great waves for SUP everyware,
I live just north of you and am having a blast with the SUP,
Had a great time at the little river mouth just to your north
in that nice swell last week,You should check it out.
Gotta love the places that a SUB open up with no crowd
worries.
I think once you get out of the metro areas there is no
need to surf the same spots as other surf craft as there is allways
an empty peak within reach fore a SUB.

Yep spot on, its the freedom suping allows which is one of the main things that appeal to me. But being a surfer first & foremost (being were my roots are) i will always do the right thing by another surfer when im on my sup, unless of course its someone that deserves to be burnt. And as for the mal riders about time they got a bit of there own. Karma hey , its a beutifull thing

hey nev
had a session a few weeks ago at the spot i think your talking about
but the swell was not north enough and the wind was 25 knots plus
still got some long fat ones all the way from out the back of the island to the beach
took a mate and let him use my other board
he had a tough time catching waves but had a blast
when we paddled across the river we had all the fishos spinning out what the hell was going on
next time its on im taking my kites to hit it as well as the sup
looks good for se cross offshore all down the line wave riding
might see you there some time
im the kook with the red gath helmet
