Guys need to know what you think about standup paddlers out at surf breaks when surf is good and big ?
basically had a few issues with sup at avalon dropping in on surfers when there is a perfectly good break next door - middles which would suit sup - standup guy out with no leggie taking out surfers
whats your thought on this

Being on a SUP is not really an issue. SUP riders have just as much right to surf as anybody else.
Dropping in, not wearing a leggie and clobbering guys is an issue.
Whatever you surf on you need to take care not to hurt anybody else and share the waves.
If this guy was misbehaving then you need to treat him as you would anybody else that was being an arse.
Obviously he should have paddled off to the other break, to avoid crowds and so he could have all the waves to himself.
I've had nothing but good reactions from surfers. The surf was quite big yesterday and I was being called into waves and got a few hoots.
I'm not a particularly good surfer but I make an extra effort to not cause any grief for other surfers. Most of the guys on this forum would try to do the same. It's all been surprisingly pleasant so far.

HI Greg ,
thanks for the reply mate ,
i am a surfer have been for years and am looking at sup for fitness and fun on smaller days ,
problem is at the moment me and many surfers are experiencing sup who have no idea dropping in and basically ruining great days in surf because they have no idea or dont give a **** about respect in the water .
it sounds like some guys on this forum understand the basic surf rules but how many dont ?
is there going to be some sort of sup clubs and assoc set up to educate people
it looks like fun and great for fitness but at the moment i am being put off by people who look like they just dont give a **** about other people in the water .

There's probably 3 specific issues for people on SUP to consider:
1. Your "kill zone" is much bigger. 3m board + 3m leash + stretch + 12kg board means you need to leave lots of room for everybody else.
2. You have a lot more paddle power so you could hog all the waves. (This is only true in good conditions. Chop and wind severely limit your ability to use the extra paddle power.)
3. Lots of SUPers are new to surf so they don't know how to behave. This is probably the worst one because if you are not aware of your limitations you won't know how to deal with them.
