call Simon at DEEP, seriously, he knows his stuff regarding foams, resins and all the glasses.

at some point it becomes a trade off. Think of race cars....some parts are only good for 1 race....

The shaper making your board should be the person you should be asking these questions to ? There are a number of different techniques and different lay ups you can use to get a lighter board yet still strong as . .... I would have a word to him see what he used it the past and what he thinks
You could try cutting back on the about of cloth your using or using 3/4 patch etc
Also if the glasser is any good you can glass it really dry don't use excess resin as there is no strength in resin only in the fiberglass so rip all the resin out and just leave enough to fill and wet the cloth ..though it's tricky you need to no how far you can go ... But the glasser should know all this

has anyone felt the lack of any weight in the Fanatic Pro Wave??? I would look at the carbon layup they do and see how they keep such a good strength to weight ratio.

I must be the only guy that likes weight in my boards My daily rider is a 10.6 mal shape and is PU! hard to carry the bugger after a session but it rides the average waves great.

mind you im not hacking and slashing or going straight up straight down.

I used the 8'0 and as light as it was that's how light my current one is. I used it and didn't enjoy it.

Carbon pinstripe through innegra glass on the bottom, plain innegra on the deck.
IMO - the perfect weight, strength, flex combination.

Po

Im not saying its my favourite board and like others I actually like a little bit of weight in my boards. Mate of mine has the Fanatic Pro Wave and although I actually dont like surfing it, he loves it. I dont know how much lighter you could go without losing strength in the board.

Why not go with a Starboard 7'7 x 27 x 3.8 92L, then there is no need to go with a custom, the weight is about 4.5kg - 5kg

Thanks guys,

Yea I know the weight of both fanatic and starboard. But I don't ride production boards, you don't get the performance of a custom sup.

I was just after helpful info on materials and everyone's been great thanks.

My board now is 7'10 28 3 3/4 98L custom C4.

Is carbon expensive these days

don't go full carbon for a surf sup imo. just because starboard do it doesn't mean its right/ the only way to go.

wouldn't pro surfers go full carbon if it was good for surfing

Not relevant as unlike 2" thick pro shortboards, SUPs don't flex enough to matter

I agree pohaku, custom is the way to go if you can find a shaper you can develop a good relationship with and get something that suits you. Most productions boards for me are either too wide, not enough rocker or too fat in the rails - and yes I have tried quite a few.

Back to the question, I always liked a combination of Carbon/'S' glass, gives rigidity combined with impact resistance.
