i'm seeing quite a few people interested surfing these boards.

a couple of things to note

well, yeah they are a big board- don't forget that

no board that size is going to turn with the nose in the water

yes you can do cutbacks etc, but it takes some practise and skill- thats half the fun of it.

be realistic about what surf you are go to take it out in- certainly not behind the rock at the alley

a strong 4 to 5 ft alley was too much, but i've been in the same size when it was fat -fun

yes they get waves early and will ride them out for a long time, but a true surfing sup,say a 10 to 12 ft will out surf a 12'6 dw any day.

i'm really enjoy surfing them. we also surf bigger board too if conditions are right, but be warned if you snap or crease any dw board in the surf and take it back to the seller- they are going to have trouble not laughing at you right in front of your face
cheers

There's no doubt that they can be fun (if you know what you're doing) ...

... but you better get ready for when that tail gets lifted by the wave because that nose is going .... d o w n..

I soooooooo have to get one of these boards. Surfing the 14' is fun but you don't want anyone near you. Or I don't, but then again, I'm the world's worst surfer. And my current 12'6 flat water racers won't work in the surf even if I knew what I was doing.

I wouldnt be taking them out in anything substantial unless you are rich2 to 3 feet days when its a bit windy or a bit full they are the weapon of choice.

Had a 12'6" Starboard Freerace for a while. Had to paddle in to a wave from near the back and made sure the nose was nowhere near the water. As soon as it touched down I was gone. Trying now to surf my 14' Glide on small runners. I think it is better standing way back as those hard rails catch pretty easily. At least the nose is less of a problem. I think it will be fun if I get the hang of it.

just got back from the alley. the banks there are awful- don't bother

anyway i was lucky enough that one stood up alright. got one wide of the rock down to just short of the towers. it just walled up all the way and i'm just about pumping the 12'6 shortboard style

oh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah- still buzzing

but it was just a freak wave- the rest of waves out there are just rubbish- really ordinary stuff.
cheers

I was surfing the Hobie Elite 14' last weekend in 3-4' off rocks and it was a fun challenge.
I am not the greatest surfer and have only been SUPing for under a year, but was able to throw the Hobie around the wave a bit. It also had Monster Paint Traction sprayed on the back which helped a lot!

Lucky you !! The best I get to take my 12'6 out in is 2-3 foot and soft! Check out this link to Danny Sheard surfing the 12'6 Race in some good stuff.
