Or, how to fool around on a prone longboard (9'2"x54", 78l for a 90kg rider... -20 litres floatation)

Patrice Guénolé testing the low volume options... and frightening all the the Gong riders with the prospect of a possible new trend in SUPing :-)

I tried it on my longboard, but with a low-volume performance longboard I have water up to the chest, no way to even begin to paddle :-) Good balance training anyways I guess if you have a longboard you can kneepaddle.

This guy is one of my favorite riders. What he can do on a SUP is insane and he always makes it look fun!

Colas, that's a good effort! I've done that many times on my windsurfer - not by choice though, sailing back to the beach in <5kts on a sinker usually after going out for that "one last run" and the wind dies out. I've had the water at my hips and still slowly moving forward.

My biggest concern is the pressure exerted on the board when it's submerged in relation to water getting in any small dings.

If you can keep balance & momentum, it's amazing just how low in litres you can go. My best effort was at 110kgs on a 78lt windsurfer and I've also got on my kids' 7' homemade sup and got it moving in the river, litres are unknown but with constant paddling I can just keep the nose above the water...I reckon it would be fun in waves.

The lowest volume I tried in waves was a 100 liters board for my 100kg ( -10 liters floatation), I traded boards with the guy with the wood/red board (7'6" Gong Dark) in the video
and it was hell. I was able to stay up and paddle around and take waves, but it required all my concentration. I would fall after 30s due to loss of focus. So I ended up waiting laying down and getting up 10s before the sets. But once on the wave I was so mentally exhausted that I wasn't exploiting the wave better than a bigger volume board anyways.

Well, I guess it all comes down to training... perhaps in 5 years time we will just laugh at these posts in the same way as we look now at posts saying that boards will never be shorter than 9', that they turn flat, have no glide, why not just use a shortboard instead...
(Well It dont actually think so, in Windsurfing after some time on hyper sinking boards, I went back to having some positive flotation)
