Travelled to Bali with Whopper on Air Asia three years ago no problem.
Only hassle was it got wedged in the x-ray machine at Perth airport on the way back.

Going Perth to Bali, Garuda tends to be best I found, have taken my 9'5" Widepoint twice with them in the last 12 months no problems.

Went Jetstar but had to take a 8'10" Widepoint as they have 9'0" max (but the flight was cheaper), still no problems with the board.

I think Air Asia is a problem over 9'0" now as well.

I took Flying Objects Heavy Duty Tie Downs fit through the windows and over the board no problems, take up less room and cheaper option.

I've travelled with Garuda with Boards and kayaks probably more than 50 times and has never been an issue or an additional cost, was told the last time that some of the internal flights now have size limits down to not much over 6' because of the planes they are using. You can also have your travel agent or Garuda themselves add a "sporting goods allowance" to your booking which will give you an additional 15kg and will smooth things with the non GA people at checkin.

Have gone with Air Asia maybe 20 times, again never an issue but you do have to pay for sporting goods, they even delivered a board via a 9hr drive when it missed the flight into Bandung from Bali FOC on my last trip!

Jetstar out of Perth states they will only carry up to 190cm so have never flown with them.

Have flown with Virgin to Bali 3 or 4 times and has never been an issue on carrying them, although ended up with a bit of rail damage last time (this was more likely baggage handlers than Virgin tho to be fair). Virgin have also always been easy to deal with on internal AU flights for both boards and kayaks.

A few of the above have been with over 9' boards however now I have gone to 9' or under to ensure there are no issues as many do state a ~9' max length. I also always tell them it's a surf board, they will get confused otherwise and may decide its too hard.

hi Kev ... i took my 9 ft 5 " Naish Hokua to Bali in June with Virgin. There and back no problem. Also flew Garuda from Lombok and they put on following large plane. Do Virgin fly out of Perth ?

Chappelle Corby has just got out maybe she will be keen to take it to Bali for you. What could possibly go wrong

Me too. I have been bumped off a JetStar flight because all the cargo on that type of aircraft (I forget which) was containerised.
If it does not fit in the container..

I have flown to an island one way of a a plane called an Islander and the 8 ft board poked out of the luggage section into the passenger section. They made me sit in one of the two seats affected and the seat next to me was unusable.

Then on the trip back on bigger plane (a Twin otter) because the luggage space was 7ft, the 8ft board had to be strapped to seats in the passenger section of the plane. The way they did it made 10 or 12 seats unusable. I would have been left behind if they had passengers for those seats.So it is worth checking and double checking. I suppose that is why the inflatable SUPs are selling so well lately.
Very tempted to leave my gear there when I travel in future..

Keen to hear what you decide to do... I have a Whopper and a 9'5" Widepoint and I am considering taking both on our next trip. Was always too afraid of the breakage/damage threat to take them previously! Then of course there is the transport challenge whenever you want to take them anywhere (I got some soft racks I was thinking could be the backup plan for a taxi if no van/bike option rented).

i emailed qantas and garuda they have both indicated as a no can do so still sus en it out .

They will all say they can't do it but it is dependant on the type of aircraft. I will only fly Virgin now as I know they will take a 12'6 without batting an eyelid and without charging anything (twice to the US and also interstate).

Any oversized baggage just goes on top of the containers they use to hold the luggage is what I have been told. Some of the cheaper airlines refuse to do it (Jetstar) and I wonder if it has something to do with their workers insurance etc as the planes are capable and that is one way they can pass on a cheaper fare.?
