Dealing with under currents

I have been out in some crap conditions and sure have has stability issues but got on ok .

Now... clean conditions but a side under current causes a lot of frustration to me especially when it's pretty clean
I loose a lot ..of stability and fall in a lot is there any advice ..?
I just paddled against it and surfed back hand .
If I try and surf the other way it's all stability gone and it's like someone trying to push your board under water and push pull it.
Very frustrating to deal with when it's so clean
