WTF is a "waterman"???

I enjoy riding waves but cannot handle the shortboard machismo scene any more so ride mostly crap waves on a sup as it is fun. If it gets good all the better.

I do it to keep fit and have fun with the kids down the beach.

There is a danger that we are taking ourselves way to seriously.

Waterman... if I can use that in a non wanky way. Surfing was always in my top 5 water sports but I would say I did others more. Probably wakeboarding #1 followed by sailing, diving and just mucking around in boats. Getting to love surfing now and getting right into downwinders. I'm still a kook surfer but I'm generally not a danger to myself or others. But I think downwinders and inter-island paddling is what I see myself doing most.

hi teatrea, the way you were powering around the lineup the other week, i wouldn't have been surprised if you dived into the water, came up with a fish, ripped its head with your bare hands and started eating it.

Straight from Urban Dictionary...

"Waterman"

A guy who is really at ease with all water activites. He is "the man" when it comes to windsurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, sailing, jetskiing, parasailing. He is also a very capable skuba diver and sea kayaker. Usually exudes an air of arrogance and can be thought of as being a complete knob. But still he is the king when it comes to water activities. (Isn't totally opposed to golden showers)

Here's one idea of a waterman.

www.squidforce.com/the-waterman/

I'd like to be a waterman but I'm not. I'm just someone who thinks surfing, standup paddleing and fishing are the best ways to use any spare time outside of work and family commitments. I'm with you Hilly, the whole "surfer" scene can take itself way to seriously sometimes. Fun is what it's all about, the fitness side of it is a bonus.

I dont know about that mate , but i once hitched a ride on a Manta ray and that was pretty cool. The only so called water man i can think of is the legend himself LAIRD.Or a guy like Trevor Hendy. To me a waterman would be a real all rounder surfer , swimmer , free diver good drinker , womaniser swashbuckling hero pirate!!

Sorry ive had a few beers!!!!!

In this context "surfer" is the most accurate because that's when I feel I'm really having fun. The SUP is just the best way to do it for the conditions I have access to.

It's also easier to talk to other people about surfing than going through the rigmarole about SUP vs surf and doing the little paddle mime. They don't understand even if you show them pictures.

I also kitesurf and paraglide and I would more likely think of those if I was trying to put a label on myself, so in brief, I'm just me. An aging kid that likes to play with toys that go swoosh.

I agree Hilly. Ive had more fun with you and the rest of the crew many times in small, crap waves but wouldnt trade it for crowded waves if you paid me.
Like you said, If its bigger and better then its even more fun

ME TOO!
When the wind comes in and all the surfers go home to cry, I just bring out my sails and continue to get more waves

I'm a sailor who got into windsurfing, then surfing, then SUPing. Ultimately I head to any beach I want - even Manly on a packed day - and go to the spots without a really good bank. It's quiet as the shortboarders can't catch anything, but I still get a load of waves (whilst watching the better waves up and down the beach).

Key for me is no hassle and I have always headed out in less than ideal conditions for a bit of space - maybe it's a UK thing when there was often 1 surfer out in the winter!

LOL I love it. I'm not a wind wanker so I guess I'm just a plane old paddle p00fter. Takes the aussies to come up with a good name. Much better than a sweeper.

Anyone who calls themselves a waterman is a TOSSER. Anyone who is considered a Waterman by others, probably is.
