does anyone have any experience with waterproof covers for phones?

i've been looking at a paqua (not sure if that's how you write it) that is sold at Whitfords marine and leisure. it costs around $29, and whilst it looks quite good, i just wanted to see if anybody uses such things whilst out paddling..... or am i being downright crazy for even thinking such a thing

Funny you say that Tans I went for a 9k paddle just a couple of days ago and had my Phone in my camelbak ,and I feel off when a boat came past ,and I thought my camelbak was waterproof but my phone is now stuffed. The only reason I had iton me was that when I finished I could ring my wife to come and pick me up. Lucky for me she was a step ahead and there waiting for me.
I'll look into those waterproof cases .

Double bagged condom tied off !! If it stops you from having hundreds of kids in a life time it should be able to keep you phone dry too.

I use the Aquapac - looks exactly the same as the one in the KeNalu article

http://www.kenalu.com/2009/01/06/dry-pak-waterproof-phoneipod-bag/ .

I've been using it for well over a year and hasn't leaked, it almost becomes my wallet if I'm on the water every day so its had a pretty hard time and is tougher than it looks. I got it from Johnny Appleseed GPS. Unfortunately mine is a flip phone so have to pull it out of the cover to use it. You can also put a GPS into it, most of them aren't actually waterproof even if they say they are.

Hey firstpoint, have to agree and would never take it surfing but for distance / openwater stuff it's not a bad idea to have.

Theres also some options in the shop...

If doing big downwinders, phone fits in my boardie pocket (at least it did during summer!) .. also come with a lanyard.

thanks all for your replies, as usual you have all the info it seems

i just wonder if all the other forums here are as helpful.

like your case DJ, specially the automatic purge valve feature, what the hell does that do? i guess it makes it hard to asnwer the phone if its ringing though

to answer firstpoint's Q. the only reason i need to take my phone out paddling, and that's only during the week, is because i work "full-time", of which some of this time i do from home every week, and i want to be able to go out paddling without taking the guilt with me..... just in case my "lunch breaks" are a bit long

i'll conceed the phone would be handy for those downwinders, pretty daunting when one goes off in the surf tho, personally for me the world stops when i get wet.

Nothing but the best for Casso - I've got the H2O Amphibx waterproof case for my iPhone and the H2O Surge - Laird Hamilton Signature waterproof headphones. Awesome quality stuff. Highly recommended.

An arm band comes with the case and I've also got an extra waist band. Great for listening to tunes while flatwater paddling and even good in the surf on lonely days (doesn't happen very often in Sydney).

Plus, in an emergency, you've always got your phone with you. You have to take it out of the case to talk into it (no mic in headset) but you can SMS via the iPhone touch screen though the clear window.

It's not cheap (RRP: AUD$250 - I think) but worth it if you do lots of solo flatwater paddling and like listening to tunes while you paddle.

Oh and before you ask for your $10 GoPro donations back because you think I can afford all the gadgets - I won my setup in a SUP photo contest on StandUpZone.com.

Casso - what an awesome setup!!! i'm SO jealous.

i actually got myself a little aquapac for my iphone today, and went off at lunchtime for a paddle and a test, would love to have the earphones, but found that i can actually listen to my ipod on phone through the cover too cool. and since i'm paddling solo, i didn't bother anybody, other than a few seaguls.

paddle was a bit hairy though! considering that it was supposed to be a s'ly in manly, it sure didn't feel like it, paddling against strong winds and chop is a real workout

This worked well yesterday during a downwind. Phone in a condom tied off then put into this case. I got this one from the SUP shop Wet Feet in Hawaii. www.wetfeethawaii.com

The bottom of the case has www.witzprod.com on it so they must be the manufacturers. I had it in a pocket of my camelback.
