Got a 11'6" standup with a single fin (box only no sides)
I need help with a fin for her.
I built it myself about 9 months ago for the purpose of flat water paddling and the small days when my 9'2" longboard struggles, but i seem to taking her out in the surf more and more as I get better at it.
At the moment I am just swapping the 9" cutaway from my longboard which seems to work OK but would like some imput on any other fin options.
thinking of templating the cutaway but filling in the cutaway,if you know what I mean. maybe a bigger fin, I dont know
Any suggestions?

Cheers

Hey MDS, could you chuck in a pic. I reckon it's always great to see boards people have made. That and I think that rail shape, tail design, rocker, width, volume, fin position etc could all affect what peoples advice may be.

Maybe a Hatchet or something similar to a FCS Classic or Single. I'd stay in the 9" range.

I wouldn't think the 9" cutaway would go well as a single fin on a 11' board (I have one on my 9'4" longboard) as there isn't much meat in the grand scheme at the base.

Search out a store that has a FCS test drive centre and try a couple fins.

As suggested try as many as you can. I have a guy in Byron make my sup/mal fins for me and we have had a fair bit of success with a fairly basey 9inch with a fine tip and nice progressive flex throughout the fin (on bigger boards) If you have mates who ride mals ask around and see if anyone has a redline fin or a greenough style fin around the 9ish inch mark and give them a try and see how they feel for you. IMO you really need to keep a nice wide base to the fin for drive but can pull heaps out of the fin tip to keep it coming off the top nice and easy without bogging down. If you try something you really like but can't buy one pm me and I will put you onto someone who can custom make a fin for you at better than shop prices.

Thanks guys for all the info.
I usually make my own fins if I can be bothered.
I think I will template my cutaway but make it with a wide base and fine flexy tip as mentioned.
If that dont work I will have a look around and maybe test a few dfferent shapes.
Thanks to you guys I have a bit of an idea of what to look for now.
We will see what happens.

Cheers

First board I made was 11ft 6in.
Thruster fin set up copied off Dick Brewer gun with a few changes due to width.
Try this set up you will not be dissappointed.
Centre Fin at 6inches, sides at 28 inches and off rail by 2 inches.
Brewer had a 14 ft gun and 12 ft gun both with thruster set ups so I thought why not at 11ft 6in regardless of shape..
Enjoy
