I was out at Palmy early this morning and had exactly the same encounter and was wishing I had a camera. The whales did a b-line for me and my mate-I could have reached out and touched them-they just hung there checking us out and breathing through their blowholes-the ended up going straight under our boards-huge animals. Looked like a mother and fairly mature calf.
Your photos are awesome. Sure is heaps of marine life around... and we get to see a glimpse of it from our tiny, wobbly craft (I guess SUPs tend to get a bit wobbly with a 100' whale underneath...)
Last Sunday at dawn we had a paddle out in honour of one of our local surfers who just passed. Around 8am, as we were getting out of our wetties, a whale breached about 300m offshore from the surf club. That whale kept heaving its body out of the water, or lifting it's tail out (what's that called?) or spouting... for an hour or two as it slowly cruised North.
it was at long reef in the morning .then i paddled with them at narrabeen after lunch. They swim straight at you then go under you just sit there.heres a picture from narrsbeen
