Hi all,

I am looking at getting a board for some long paddles including some ocean downwind paddling.
With no expertise the Starboard 12' 6"Freerace looks like it could be the go.
Any comparisons with the 12' glide or any other board reccomendations?
I am 85-90kg (depending how many beers the night b4)
I have been supping for a while more in the surf though.

thanks,
Nick

If downwinding is your thing, the Naish 14 Glide is yours.

I understand the Free Race is essentially the same board as the current Pin. They are offering it in 29" or 31" instead of the standard 30" for the Pin and there will probably be some other adjustments to the shape. Really hard to tell because the brochure image of that model is not a photograph. Apparently none of those 2010 SB race series boards will be available until at least mid April.

just had a looky.the new looks really hardcore. for more all round, i would say the surf. it is still narrow. you would have to be on your game

Yeah the New with it's 23" or 25" width and the foot wells definitely looks hard core flat water racing and not so much down wind.

There's not many boards to choose from to do what you're after but I think the Naish 14' Glide would be perfect.. IMO..

Hey Nick,

It's great to see you interested in doing some DW paddling.

There are a few important questions that need to be asked before I can give you any advice on this:

1) Are you interested in cruising/racing or both?
2) What type of distances do you think you would like to be paddling?
3) Where do you live (this will help determine whta the local conditions are like)?
4) What type of SUP storage facilities do you have?
5) What is your budget?

Hi Mikeman

in order of questions.
1. both but probably more cruising
2. 5-10ks initially getting further as I get better (and fitter)
3. ballina NSW paddles will be on the richmond river and paddles from byron to lennox, lennox to ballina or the other direction depending on wind, and paddles around Julian Rocks from Byron
4. a long garage
5. hard to answer, I have no problem spending the money if I think I'll get the use out of something and the quality is there, but dont want to go over the top, as wave riding and normal surfing will still be main priority, really just looking for some thing when the wind blowing and there is no surf.

Any advice (including that already given gratefully accepted.

thanks,
nick

Nick,

I would strongly recommend that you come for a paddle with us up here on the GC. We normally have heaps of different boards available and swap them around regularly. This way you will be able to work out what you like.

As you live down near Balina I would also recommend that you try hook up with Andy and Joel. They are starting to do some regular DW paddles down that way.

It would probably be advisable for you to go for a longer board (16/17') with a rudder. You can also try the 14' without a rudder and see what you think. The S-N trips are the best and a longer board fits nicely into those swells.

Dale Chapman and I will also be heading down that way a lot in the next few months. We are planning a Ballina to Burleigh paddle so want to get to know the whole coast line. We should hook up down there sometime.

Send me an email with your contact details and I will add you to our DW list
