I was reading a review of the wavegrinder at supsurfmag.com, so I remembered another winged fin, the starfin.

Is any one has tried it with a SUP ?

That's Cheyne Horan and his short and wide (pumpkin seed) board...Notice the Starsky and Hutch jacket.. ..Yeah that pic's from the 80's I think.

I remember Bob Mc Tavish or Midgit Farrelly telling me about how they watched Cheyne paddle out at Waymea on a big day and the Hawaiians watching in fits of laughter because Cheyne was out to prove his boards (like the one in the pic above) could work in big waves..The locals knew otherwise..and of course he wiped out big time and dragged his arse up the beach in front of everyone..He couldn't leave quick enough.

Anyway...I don't know if you can still buy those winded keel fins (starfin) but I've heard a few longboarders say that they are real good for noseriding.

I would not go near one myself..but that's just my opinion....btw..What's wrong with a normal fin..

Thanks Casso I just noticed that...Jeeez 1000..it's gone so quick...and I don't know about the legend bit.. ..I don't think spending too much time on the computer justifies that.

I would like to say that my post (above) sounds very dis respectful of Cheyne Horan because he is an Aussie surfing legend and he did go on to be one of the best big wave surfers..and still is...Maybe he's now into SUP like most of the other Aussie surfing legends.

I sometimes just type away off the top of my head and later think that sounds bad or it's not what I meant..It's just when ever I think about Cheyne Horan that story comes to mind.

Regarding that fin I'm just not a fan of upright fins on both windsurfers and surfboards/SUP's..They do work well for going up wind windsurfing on a slalom board and can fix cavitation or spinout problems but they do tend to want to steer the board rather than the board turning off the rail..They also don't like shallow water and being dragged across the sand where a fin with rake will drag without a problem.

Anyway that's enough of me crapping on..

Congratulations DJ. No Teahupoo status here, but it should be worth a TeaShirt.
