boy, i've heard this heaps, last time by kelly(we ran into him on his ski )at the alley creek break wall down wind fun park about 2 hrs ago. ne winds, runners and waves pushing through. both kelly and dale reckon it's pretty close to the real thing. yeah, we got the steering sorted after changing the displacement nose to concave with angled chimes to full concave with angled chimes. it's good when your shaper is hooting and goes, yep she works real well as you ride past him as he is paddling back out. the board flies, catches anything. now the best part today for me was its handling. i let the nose go under heaps, no worries at all, just pushes back up with no fuss. the two chimes make it very control-able and easy. just keep the rail even and it will come up with out doing any thing weird.we both feel you could paddle this board for long periods with out caning yourself. looks like the next dc 17 will be like my cut out and patch 17'. the board has exceeded my wildest dreams. fast, stable, loves runners( it always did) and easy to handle.

dale took out the dc14 gun and i swapped so he could try the 17'. i was thinking this is going to be a let down- no way. this board is way to much fun. every time i a got a wave or runner i just had this stupid grin on my face. it is the best ride because of it's surfboard origins and it wasn't hard to pick up the wave/runners. i'm going to beg for a go on the next lightweight model. this just for those who asked about it by forum and email
cheers

Hey Lacey,

The forecast for a downwinder looks great this weekend. I am keen for a Seaway to Burleigh/Currumbin either Sat/Sun.

Let's get a few different boards together and test that board out...

If anyone else wants to come along get hold of Dale Chapman. It will not be a race so don't worry about that - we always stick together out there

Ok, let's meet at the boat ramp at Currumbin at 11am Sat 27th Nov. We can work out a car pool etc and head off up to the seaway.

9.15am Sat 28th:

The conditions have deteriorated and it does not look good for a long downwinder from the Seaway to Currumbin. We will still meet at 12 and decide what to do. I am still keen to get wet so maybe a shorter on from Burleigh to Currumbin might be better.

Tomorrow actually looks better so we could do a longer downwinder then...

mikeman and myself did a narrow neck to tally ck today. i had never done that direction before. i thought it looked hard and i wasn't wrong.the swell head some east in it and when we paddled out or cut back out the swells were overhead and lots of em and i seemed to be looking up at them, i had never been in anything like this. you feel very small.i fell off heaps and swapping boards was very difficult. i was lucky to have mike there, he is very experienced and he said it was a pretty technical run . the board went really well for me. mike said it got runners easily and stayed on them longer with less strokes.towards burleigh we were pretty much paddling side ways to the swell and i came off at the shark nets trying to avoid them. didn't take me long to get back on. anyway, i've got a few things to work on for next time. mike could probably say more about the board. i'm keen to get better at doing d/wand the only way is to do plenty of them. having some one with you who is good and to learn from is a must i reckon
cheers

I was wondering how it would have been out there. The Kiteboarders looked like it was on for them.

I had a paddle in your breakwall 'fun park' yest morning on the run out just after high tide and had an absolute ball. On shore, super bumpy with wind on it and tide running back through it but all the way from big rock to the creek car park with the escalator taking you back out..... Most fun I have had in ages.

Working on getting a DW board this week so I will PM you to perhaps hook up for a creek challenge or even better a DW. Great post, makes me realise that the best things in life usually need a lot of work to achieve. I can't wait.

Yes, the N-S downwinders are a whole lot different than the S-N ones here on the Gold Coast. There is normally always some East in the swell so the swell is usually a little on the side. These are actually really nice conditions (once you have a little bit of sea-time under your belt) as you need to do a lot of directional changes. Also, as these runs generally have a shorter wave length the longer boards slot into the pockets nicely at an angle to the swell.

It was a really challenging paddle for Lacey, being his first N-S downwinder, but he did really well. Once he got the hang of it he realised what fun there is to have out there. On days like these you can get really nice runs.

The DC17 still goes reallly well. It was hard to work out if it went better than before the modifiications but I will know once we do a S-N downwinder. These runs are harder to catch and stay on so we will see....

I will start up a new post called "Downwinders on the Gold Coast" to gauge the level of interest of people wanting to get into it. It is important that people wanting to get into doing downwinders do so safely. There is a lot that can go wrong out there and we don't want any accidents.

just might add, i had a few people saying you will put the nose under, etc. sure, i trialed doing this in the creek mouth, but never once on that run. my main reason for falling off was as mike said, a lot of directional changes in that direction and the handling is a rather different to my 8'8. just to give an idea. i got a runner, cut across, looped over that swell and got the next one that had me cutting even more. feeling rather pleased with myself, suddenly i saw a swell that came across me and smashed over the front of my board- got sent flyng on that one

hey mike, if the board was better pre modifications on s/n downerwinders, it must have been out of this world.just about every thing seems catchable and some lenght of rides_________-
swapped over to the dc14, it's more fun then you can poke a stick and super stable - truly like surfing a wave
cheers

Hey Lacey,

No, I did not say that the board went better pre-modifications as I need to test it in S-N conditions first. That board of yours felt really good on the N-S conditions so I am really keen to see how it goes on the "harder" runs (harder to catch and maintain that is). You've got a great board there so you should have plenty of fun on it in the deep blue stuff...
