I just seen one on the McTavish website. They have been around a while have they? I cannot find any reviews on them.

Im just browsing for my next board (dream board), something around 6'10 single fin that paddles really well. Bluebird looks mint. Any thoughts guys?

Do you want a board that looks like a board from the 70's and surfs like a board from the 70's or do you want the 70's look with modern handling ?

Have a look also at south coast longboards website - they do some amazing singles as well.

Will do BB, I like watching the 70's single fin surfing so would like to give it a crack. Would be good to surf a board from a previous generation, surf through the years of evolution I guess. Old Mals are a little out of my price range so 70's single fins would be the next generation I would tackle.

Having not actually surfed one of them before what is the go? How do they paddle and what is the best way to get the most out of them?

You should be able to get an OK one on flea bay for around 100 bucks. Might need a few repairs but it will be the genuine article....garage sales and cash converters are always good as well for these beauties. Move you back foot around when surfing 'em close it up when your trimming and the get it over the back fin when you want to lay dwon some turns....watch tubular swells daily!!

I watched a you tube clip with Terry Fitzgeralds sons (I presume). They shaped boards based on Terry's and man they rip on them! They were so fast and ripped chunks out of the wave when they stood back on the tail and laid a carve. Awesome stuff. Im inspired now...just need the talent to ride them properly they did not look easy to ride I may have to track down a larger one then the 5'10 they shaped

I have a 7'0 that I ride...there really good fun. I love it on the backhand throwing big hooks pretending I'm Wayne Lynch...I've never really got it that dialled on the forehand though??

7'0 sounds about right size. I struggle on anything shorter than that. I am now officially on the hunt! Lookout garage sales and e-bay!

Would love a new board of a similar shape but cant afford that atm

Ok - I am certainly no expert on singles but on the few outings I have had I love them - once I can get em going. By that I mean, I have a bit of trouble generating speed on the takeoff and getting them going. On smaller boards I am kinda used to riding quads which generate speed very quickly so it may be just that I am expecting too much from the single or maybe I just need to learn to surf one properly. Once up and going though I love the feeling of being on a single and the fact that you need to start thinking more about the way you are surfing and being less erratic. After a while you start to surf way more smoothly and drawing out your turns a lot more, rather than trying to muscle the board around like you tend to do at times on a thruster.
Just for your info' I was looking in Ripcurl today and they are clearing a lot or their Maurice Cole single fins for around $400 ish and they are smick looking boards (imports, but good shapes). They had a fair range of sizes and the quality seemed pretty good.
