I’ve never owned an epoxy board until I got this 9’6 Tolhurst and I’m really happy with it. Mostly because it’s easier for a fatass like me to catch waves yet it’s still easy to turn it quickly.

I knew about the corkyness of these boards and it’s true, they are all over the place in chop and white water but I’m happy to put up with that for the advantage of being able to get on board more waves.

It’s the acceleration that seems a bit strange, maybe it’s just me being as useless as ever but I noticed it again today. Admittedly it was only small but it happened near the shore dump when the wave was making a fairly decent wall over a couple of feet.

I’d bring her up to the lip at a reasonable speed, and then shuffle forward a tad after I point her down the face and instead of just whizzing past a little closing section, I’m in the middle of it.

I never had anyone tell me these boards don’t accelerate too well, has anyone else experienced this? It could be the boards subtle way of saying to me “
you know it wouldn’t hut if you missed a meal every now and then.”

I have a Surftech David Nuuhiwa 9'8" noserider.
Very rockered up on the tail & turns unreal.
Its the same very slow, you have to walk the board.
Once up the nose it really goes due to the flater rocker.
Try this hope it works.

Thanks, I think you're both right, I know for sure that I don't walk enough and I should because this board holds me up on the nose better than any other I've had.

And I don't think it's even classed as a classic nose rider.

obct,I took a surftech Fireball to Bali last year (first epoxy) board I have owned and the first thing I did on my return was sell it! It was the same spec's as my glass board which is much faster than the surftech

OBCT,
It's your rails.

They are bulked up to carry extra weight and won't cut thru the water.

Walking to the nose is a stalling technique. (will slow you down).

Epoxy boards are one board for the many.
Get a custom made to suit you.

Good luck.

I have a 9'4 O'Donnnell that was custom made for me by steve but I still seem to be able to catch more waves on the Tolhurst.

There's no doubt that when I'm up and running, the O'Donnell rips the tuflite to bits.

I'll be going on a little safari up to Coffs soon and dropping into creso on the way, I'll take them both with me and see how they go. I'm now starting to lust after the O'Donnell because I've lost a couple of kilos and I'm starting to get a bit fitter since I've been surfing more and working on the buggy less.

obct - nope, they worry me too. Four of them at a crowded metro bank on Sunday morning... and even though it was barely 1ft, they were causing people to duck/dive and generally worry... To be fair, the learners crowding the inside and throwing their boards when a 1.5ft close-out came through were probably as much of a concern... Ah, the joys of metro surfing!

I enjoy watching a really good SUP pilot even though it’s usually only on Utube that I get the chance to see it done well, however the weekend warriors are a different thing altogether.

I know I’m crap but I’ve got a pee shooter compared to them and it’s easy for me to avoid hurting anyone, or myself. But for these noobs, it’s like giving a 10 year old a Dirty Harry Magnum and saying “go shoot the apple of that guys head”. I’m sure the kid will eventually do it, but there’s going to be a fair amount of collateral damage along the way.

I’m up at 17 stone but seeing some of these guys makes me feel like a super model, the noobs often have a gut that makes them look like they could easily get work doing prego porn and wetties are very unkind to people like us.

I’m sure it will all even out in time and only the dedicated guys will stick with it, just like the goat boats.

Before I started surfing I can remember seeing them everywhere and most of them weren’t doing too good.

Now you only see the occasional goat boat and generally the guys on them are good and you know you can trust them.

Yeah it seems you have to have a big moter (gut) to be part of the in crowd when you carry a paddle. There was a bloke at strickos the other day putting on a very decesnt display. Its a shame that boogers didn't fade like the goat boaters.

Go back to the O'Donnell - I love mine wouldn't ride anything else for a longboard these days.

As for boards not accelerating it seems like PU and Epoxy boards required 2 different techniques, or at least that what it feels like between my 6'10" PU and 6'10" Epoxy shortboards
