Bored as so just watched these two DVD's, They're quite good and I don't care that Arise was probably made to promote and advertise the various brands, it's still good. I did manage to get my new board wet over the weekend, it's a pop out RA Predator step deck and I'm pleased to say it went well for me

Asea yeah that's actually a tricky one, I guess depends what sort of person you are? Me I love to watch surf films over and over, then get them out again a year or so later and watch them over again..however I agree there are certain films that wouldn't be worth more than one watch. But I think Hangloose is roughly an hour long, the music's ok, there are sporadic moments of stand up in it but some pretty darn good surfing..prob just rent it.

Has anyone seen this one? not even sure if it's been released, is it Raglan? I guess it could be Ahipara...hmm or pretty much any left hand point break?

Hi Kagey - that is Raglan in the first part of the vid.....spent 4 yrs surfing it most days in the early 90's........the surfing is at Manu Bay - which is the big bay in the foreground from overview shot. The furtherest spot you see is Indicators with Whale Bay in the middle. Its an awesome spot. A lot more crowded these days than it used to be but still fairly empty by Australian standards - especially mid week. If you get the chance one day make sure you surf it - the waves are incredible and its very consistent. Manu Bay at 4 - 6 foot with a low outgoing tide provides some pretty special moments from take off. The "ledge" is insane on its day. Indicators is still my fav though. I would recommend heading there April - June. In April the water is still warmish but you start getting the early winter swells with light winds. You will not regret it!!

I will try and dig some shots out from my last trip home later in the day.

Awesome pics Ted thanks! Yep I keep saying i'm going to Raglan fora day trip...still haven't, unreal hey?! But now i'm gonna orgainse something sooner rather than later. Also a mate of mine surfs Port Waikato regularly and i'm gonna hook up with him next time he goes. I'll try and get some pics when I do as it's supposed to be good there. Have you been Ted? I know it's not that far from Raglan.

When I was just a kid I guess I might have been 12-13 , I tied my board on top of my oldmans PA Vauxall drove to & through Hamilton to Raglan , I had heard of Raglan but didn't really know were it was . We ended up at Whale Bay ,it was a lot differant thanit is today a dirt track to the break instead of a paved street.
There was just four guys out in the water ,I can remember hearing them hooting as they rode 6' glassy lefts wave after wave . I had a 6'2 Bob Davies it was about 20' wide Ithink It had a fin box I used to push the fin in with news paper which swelled when the paper got wet (dum idea ) so no leg rope .This was about mid winter I paddled out and managed to ride some and go home with my board in one peace. Don't think I'll ever see that place like that again . After I left school and got a job in Hamilton I surfed it alot more . Memories (bugger you Ted)Lol

Great stuff TB - were you driving at 12/13?? Jeepers I can imagine you getting away with that in Gissy but not Ham Vegus!!! Although it was a lot smaller in those days.

No leg rope at Rags must have been a horrific experience - unless of course you knew no better! Maybe Manu wd have been the preferred spot as less obstacles / rocks when you lost yr board!!!

Hey Kagey - we used to get up to Port W occasionally. Usally when it was smaller and Ruapuke had crap banks. There are loads of waves north of the harbour at Raglan all the way up until Port W. They can all get pretty good on their day - you will just need to do some hunting and make sure you ask permission before crossing farmers land - they used to be pretty cool about it when we went there - some of them even let us drive through their paddocks.

Port W itself used to be a pretty fat type of wave but could deliver on its day. There is a gnarly left hand reef break at the southern end that can handle the big stuff as well. It was never worth heading further north along the beach as the sand always used to be crap.

Joel Tudor is the best longboarder I've ever seen. There's a flick called Longer and its all Joel Tudor riding logs, fishes, eggs, midlengths and hp mals. He can ride anything really well. Check that one out if you get the chance Chrispy.
