G'day Folks,
Can you help a newbie out?
For years I have said "geez I'd like to give surfing a try" but either my health or work or something else has stopped me from actually having a go.

Well, I have just turned 50 and my darling Wife has forced me to actually get in and have a go by buying me a Mal.

Yeah I know, I should have taken some lessons and hired some different boards before buying one but what can I do . . . Wifey just wants to make me happy.

Can someone tell me what I have here 'cause I know 3 fifths of 5 eighths of nothing about boards.

Its a Nigel Beckham; Black Lable with these dimensions written on it:
9'2" X 14 3/4 X 23" X 19 1/2" X 2 7/8"

I'm 5'9" and around 110kg, am I going to be able to ride this thing?

Any help greatfully accepted
Cheers

Never heard of them but that's saying nothing because I've never really known other surfers outside of the guys I know around here.

They look nice on the web page

http://www.beckhamsurfboards.com/Surfboards_Nose_Rider.html

At 110kg it would probably be better if you had a bit of experience behind you for a board of that size. The 23" width is probably fine but you may have been better with a 3" thick board rather than the 2 7/8".

All that aside, just because you have the board it doesn't mean you're obliged to use straight away. You can still go out and have a lesson or 2 on a really buoyant soft top and even rent one a few times.

If you start out on a really good board and don't do too well, you're going to get pissed off real quick.

Trust me, even on a fat arsed soft top, once you finally get up on even a half way decent wave with just a hint of a clean wall to work on, you'll be hooked for life and do everything you can to get that new board to work.

Hi Phredo, welcome aboard

Firstly Nigel is based on the Gold Coast and is one mighty fine longboarder who competes in the malfunction ,noosa festive ect. Now Nigel has away's pushed the limit in longboard design with his twin fin mals.
Nigel did have a shop at Tugun but I don't know where he shapes or sells his wears now days

Mate at 110kg the board you have will be fine for you if your paddle fit or fit in general
If not you will struggle paddling into waves and back out until the fitness kicks in [}:)]

post a pic I would love to see the new weapon and great wifey you have, all in all sound sweet Where do you surf/live. Let us know how you go,its all fun.

Cheers mac

Yeah, a pic would be nice.

You may as well start your gallery now.

I'd love to know how those twin fin Mullets on his web page would go as a 9'6", I don't ever recall seeing twin fin mals that big.

really mate, who cares about the board - Your a newb, the board is MASSIVE, its gonna work for you...

You dont need lessons, just learn some basic surfing etiquette which is pretty much simple common sense. Avoid the main packs so you dont get in the way while your honing your skills - it takes a while!

now, stop procrastinating and get out there!!!

Sounds and looks like a great board on the site - where you riding it? Only takes one good wave to get hooked.

If you start to get frusterated with it get a lesson - most places will do a private with your board to help get you started. (flame suit on)

hahha . . . great stuff guys - Thanks very much.

I'll endeavor to post some pics. This thing is actually a tri-fin but it only came with the one.

I'm in Brisbane but am on the GC nearly every week with work.
Fitness isn't too bad for what I already do (I play hockey every week and am in the gym nearly every day). But I'm not kidding myself about the fitness needed to surf.
Knees are crap but I am doing something about them and I reckon this will help me . . . .

Next question is where do I go? What sort of wave am I looking for and what are the best weather conditions ?

Thanks again for the welcome - much appreciated.

If you do that level of exercise I doubt the fitness thing will be a problem, your 110 kg sounds to be mostly muscle. My 110 kg is mostly meat pies

The thing that stopped me going in the water for a long time was my knees, in particular the left one. Years ago I buggered it helping my daughter move house.

Last November I decided to have it looked at and the solution was a really simple op to remove some torn meniscus cartilage.

If you play hockey a bit, is there any chance you may have been whacked a few too many times and just need some meniscus trimmed off?

Oh no Mate (OBCT), when I say PLAY hockey, I really mean wobble about on a field with my other round belly Mates for a couple of hours.
Then we go and drink beer.
My knees are just plain worn out from so much sport "back in the day".
Had a number of operations on them but all 3 orthopedic surgeons I have been to say the same thing - I have 80 year old knees in my 50 year old body.
The next thing is knee replacement surgery but I need to put that off as long as possible because the metal knees are really only suited to walking and generally only last 15 years . . . I'm 50 so having my legs cut in half a couple of times before they put down, isn't something I really want to do.

Anyho, I am really looking forward to learning how to stand up on a board.
Cheers

Fredo

So, I hastily snapped off some shots of my 9' 2" Nigel Beckham and here they are.
There are a few dings but nothing to be concerned about I think.
Can someone explain the potential fin setup?
What will adding extra fins do?
Rememebr please, I am a rank newbie so a looking for stability initially.
Cheers
Fredo

Whoa, that's a rad mal

he's certainly an adventurous shaper, can't recall ever seeing a quad set up on a board that long before.

Stick with the single fin for now.

looks the sort of board that could be a good turner but I don't understand the black line from just forward of centre all the way back to the fins.

Does that mean it's a big flat planing section?

Mac, you know the guy a bit, does he do a lot of these? I love looking and these out of the ordinary boards.

All except those meynhoffer (or whatever they call them) thingys, I just reckon they look like the worlds biggest butt plug or sanitary pad.

Hi guy's

Firstly, a lot of shapers use a pin line ( black line which obct is referring to ) to highlight the concave. I think the board is made for more left and speed

Secondly,on the fin set up,I'd drop a 8 inch centre and a couple of small fcs outers in the front plugs, this will give you move stability INHO

Hey Fred if your on the goldie and need any help in the water or what ever,pm me only to happy to help you get ripping asap [}:)] Oh and I will tell the best place to learn.

I didn't tell you this but DON'T start on the straight beach breaks, I guarantee you will learn a thousand times faster if up start on a nice point wave. Just start catching the white wash then catch the reforms and your way or just go for it and catch the wave before it breaks, just keep in mind when learning, avoid crowds until you get your P's

Hey all
Have been reading all the comments on the yellow board. I designed that board on info and advice from an aircraft engineer, with hydro dynamics and aero dynamics being similar. It is a concave inside the pinline that narrows into the tail increasing pressure and asisting in creating more speed and lift , when riding on the tail.

I am mad on surfboard design and am not afraid to get out on a tangent to prove a point. Making surfboards for me is not just a job, it is a passion and design is something I am always working on.

Am just about to launch a new nose rider that is way out there, but I am confident there will be some real merit in there somewhere.

Check our website in about a week - www.beckhamsurfboards.com

Any comments and ideas are always welcome

Now that there's a pro on board, does this mean I'm no longer allowed to make my ill-informed, inexperienced, halfarsed comments anymore

lol obct, mate after reading Nigel's post I had to read my post / comments on Fred's weapon [}:)] Thank god I was not too far of the mark otherwise I would have been forced to stick my head in the sand and view the world from inside out

If Nigel is creeping, I for one would look forward to some design talk and photos of some of your work. I do recall visiting your store some years ago when you were making the twin fin, I read a post in the sup forum as a guy made his own sup and IMHO he had the fin setup all wrong, too far back and without any toe mac
