How do you guys feel about lots of noisy chatter while you’re out the back waiting for a set?

Not the kind where 2 or 3 mates are just chewing over life in general but rather the kind where you get a budding stand-up comedian that most people in the line up wouldn’t know from a bar of soap. He maybe paddles out with just one mate and then starts rabbiting on endlessly and loudly with comments designed for everyone to enjoy (well at least he thinks everyone enjoys them).

His repartee incudes the usual compliment of hoots and hollers for all and sundry if they so much as get a sniff of a wave and after he’s blessed with his own wave, he paddles back out to give us a blow by blow commentary regarding every thrilling moment of the ride.

This happened to me on Saturday and I’m not sure if I think it’s bad Karma or not.

Because of a slight disability, I try to avoid verbal communication, when there’s a lot of background noise going on or the people I’m trying to communicate with are monotones, which this guy definitely was not. For me it just all blends into a single unintelligible cacophony of sound.

On the other hand, this guy was really friendly to everyone and he just wanted to enjoy the day and the company therefore it’s hard to deny someone such a simple pleasure.

What does everyone else like? Do you appreciate a lot of chatter or do you prefer to be in your own space and time out there?

Perhaps it depends on the day!

I can tell you one positive about chatting, sometimes a couple of guys are so engrossed, they forget to keep and eye on the sets or they let themselves drift out of the takeoff zone. That’s 2 less to complete with for waves.

Good point obct,I've surfed the same spot for years now and a guy came into my shop a couple of weeks ago claiming to one of my staff that he knows me,when the staff member mentioned this to me,I looked at this guy and thought, hmm his face looks familiar When I got talking to him he said he sees me out in the water often He then told me that some of the locals have asked about that guy on the longboard who doesn't talk much and why Why because I am, well shy maybe and I am just sucking in the ambiance and generally chilling and enjoying some timeout.
A few weeks ago the surf was perfect around my limit in height and I was loving it and catching plenty until this guy paddles out and starts chatting about life, for the next 40 minutes my wave count was like 3 with a time frame this really ate into my surfing time and as we all know time is super important.
This Saturday at the same spot all was good until three Americans paddled out and sat right beside me.They were talking all this crap about have you read this book by bla bla bla! They were nice enough guy's but I really didn't go for a surf to hear about there uni stuff.I paddled in a short time later, all their chat just upset my frame of mind. mac

There's also the type of day when it's fairly cruisey and you end up having a nice chat with someone you've never seen before and probably won't ever see again. I've also been given a few waves on these days when those same chatty people will not even contest a wave and call you onto it. Just to prove I'm not too selfish, I've also given others some waves.

To me the best chatty times are when you are not necessarily talking non-stop or at a volume or rate that irritates everyone else. Sometimes sharing the good times with others, even total strangers, makes going surfing even better. After all, surfing is usually a very selfish past time.

However, the really loud and self appointed best surfers in the world can be pretty annoying.

Admittedly Saturday arvo was a very poor day and most people were happy to share the merger offerings around.

There is not enough of it. But at the same time if someone can't figure out they don't want to be listened to, then they have the problem.

I was down south and I have been known to be a chatty type depending on the mood. For instance I was down south on the weekend and enjoyed waves all weekend. Had Tuesday off and was able to surf with the locals. Not only were people saying hello in the car park, people were engaged in chit chat out in the surf. The rest of the weekend was hard enough to ask someone for the time without some booger paddling by lookin at me sideways.[}:)]

And what is it with you boogers why can't you just pick a genereal area in the surf and stay there. Instead of paddling everywhere like a lost penguin looking for a peak.

I dunno kids these days??
