I had someone critique a piece I wrote and they said:
"The reference to 'clearance sets' is not appropriate."

Before I get back to them to find out what they mean by "clearance sets" I thought I would ask you lot whether you use the term.

When I use the phrase "clearance sets" I mean a set of waves that are so much larger than the normal waves coming through that board riders get "cleared" from the area of the take-off.
Your comments please..

+ 4 - meaning a rouge set of bigger waves that catches all by surprise and 'cleans' up the take off zone...

Doggie on a trip to indo one year I was setting in the boat watching the young lad taking off on some solid lefts and the boat driver fell asleep, after half an hour I had to wake him up because the boat started drifting into the inpact zone

Saw someones tinny break from its morings over at Rotto one day, 6-8ft with much bigger clean up sets. It got bounced around a bit but it wasnt as badly dammaged as you would think.

Took a trip to CR 7-8 years ago when I was still living in Canada. Learned to surf there and was out at Mal Pais when I saw a "big set" coming. Paddled my butt off and said nothing to the GF and watched her cop it.

Her story goes that the frechies that ran the rental place started holering at her "hey blondy, Fk'n paddle" before she was cleaned up.

Lesson - say nothing, then giggle

I have always called them Horrie sets, and there is nothing worse than being caught out by one that has about a dozen or so waves in it.
But still nothing better than seeing one coming, not telling ya mates them looking back at the horror on their faces as you just sneak under the lip just a mere 5 meters in front of them

^ Lacey, that's called cleaning up the line-up!

I bet the 17 Bullet would probably go OK in some bigger waves... Provided you have the experience, and just aim for the shoulder... And don't mind risking ending up with 2 pieces!
